emperor or asian forest?

is it emp or afs?

I would go with a Heterometrus of some sort, doesn't look like an Emp to me. Emps usually have bumpy and bulbous chelea (claws) if I'm not mistaken.

I agree with iitomodachi1. The lack of granulation and shape of the chelea as well as the black telson point toward Heterometrus as apposed to an Emp.

Yes, this is an AFS, but gotta be careful though, because there are Heterometrus sp. with granulation on the chela. The black telson gives it away, but some Heterometrus do have colored telsons.

Like all the friendly peeps here have said, its not an emperor. Once i had a seller who sold 2 AFS to me when i have ordered Emperors.
I had to show him this picture in order to convince him..

Thanks mate. Yeah.. just a simple image of comparison i made of the pictures from the net. Sry for not using the correct terms such as chela or granulation.. as i doubt the dude who sold me the scorps know what they meant.. -.-

im going to guess H. spinifer too... mine had the black telson (though im sure they are not the only species that does).

I was wondering about that, I had been calling Asian Forest Scorpions AFS's. I'd assume that the Emperor was an 'African' forest scorpion. Although there is the H. Swammerdami which is an Indian scorp. I also notice a lot of confuse for AFS's being both H. laoticus and H. Spinifer.

They could be other Heterometrus species like petersii. It's really a pain ID'ing these guys!

i thought petersii when i first saw it just for the fact its completely black with no colouring between the exoskeleton

the size and shape of the telson... along with the enlarged tooth of the tarsus (movable finger) on the chela; makes me lean towards Heterometrus petersii (male). Only males have that enlarged tooth.

H. petersii is frequently mistaken for H. spinifer since their ranges sometimes overlap slightly. I think this is the 3rd or 4th time I've had to pick out a H. petersii from H. spinifer. Others may suggest Heterometrus laoticus But between H. petersii and H. laoticus... I'm still uncertain since I've never really seen enough specimens of H. laoticus.

H. laoticus is the only Heterometrus sp. without any granulation on its carapace. It's kind of hard for me to see from that picture, but as Alex pointed out, it's probably not H. spinifer.

There was a PDF floating around the internet somewhere that had a great guide to IDing Heterometrus spp. and even had diagrams of where granulation was on the carapace of each species.

thanks a lot! that stuff was great. by looking at that id have to say petersii because of the claw tooth and the slight granulation on the head. do you guys concure?
