PostSubject: Centruroides Vittatus or Hentzi?   12/12/2010, 1:46 pm

Sometime down the road I'd like to add a bark scorpion to my collection but some of the US bark scorpions sort of look the same and I get confused. I know that to experienced keepers there are differences but for the life of me C. vittatus and Hentzi look almost similar.

Can anyone give me some differences between between these two, particularly when keeping them. I read that C. vittatus is the most communal of all the bark scorpions.

I've read the scientific information about these two species but I guess it's their behavior that I'm interested in.

IMO, all bark scorpions are at about the same level when it comes to they tolerance of others. The main difference in C. hentzi and C. vittatus is their color and size. C. hentzi are considerably smaller and come in a dark reddish orange and beige color. C. vittatus can be dark orange with lighter colored stripes and they have a dark triangle on their "face." C. vittatus can also be yellow with darker stripes, or yellow with lighter stripes or just yellow with no stripes at all! It all depends on where they're from. The further east, the darker and vise versa.

When keeping them, C. hentzi like it a little more moist than C. vittatus. Otherwise, that's the only difference!

I may be mixing these up with other species as I'm just replying off the top of my head but I thought that C. Hentzi were a FL bark scorpion and C. Vittatus were a Texas Bark scorpion although I think C. Vittatus have a broad range even up in to the Midwest (just not this far north Sad ). Feel free to correct me on this but I thought that was what I read some where. I also tried to ID a scorp (turned to be a C. Vittatus for a local petshop so I may have picked up something around that time.

You are correct! Sorry I wasn't clear enough in my post...C. hentzi range from FL to GA and maybe on the borders of other states.

C. vittatus range in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas(?), Missouri, Kansas, Colorado(?) and I think Louisiana? I'm probably leaving some out, this is just from memory.

Thanks to both of you for putting their geographical ranges in simple terms.

I have never seen a bark scorpion or have been able to observe them so I have no idea as to their behavior.

Take for example my Hadrurus arizonensis; I never see it during the day but at night it comes out between 9-10:00pm(PST) like clockwork. I keep red infrared lights on at night close to it's cage so I can observe it. It doesn't seem to be bothered by the lights. It will come out of it's burrow and stops immediately for at least 30 minutes then walks about the cage. Sometimes it takes a drink of water but rarely, then goes over to a corner and tries to climb the corner then crawls over to a rock or log and starts digging. After awhile it moves over to another structure and digs some more. Sometime during the night it retires back into it's burrow and will not come out till the next evening. But that's what it does.

So, how do Bark Scorpions behave. I know my example above is a simplistic way of clarifying my question but maybe you'll understand what I'm after.

My Babycurus Jacksoni is NEVER out and about! Not even during feeding are there any activity... They simply wait for the prey to come to them! The only time I see them is when I flip bark to check for vital signs Rolling Eyes

My Centruroides Gracilis is a different story! It's out and about every night but under the bark during daytime...

That's the only two I have ,that categorizes as "bark scorpions" (as far as I know)!

i had 3 c. hentzi at different points in time...
the first time i had a male and female WC, i kept them in the same 1 gallon enclosure.
the male was always wandering about at night, the female was a little more difficult to find, during the day though, both were hidden very well in the bark pieces i had laying around in the tank.

the second time, i had a wc male (i have my suspicions that the female i had was gravid, but i got rid of them so i could get my baby emp, so i can only speculate that i maybe caught one of the babies)
but it was the same as the adult male i had, it would stay hidden all through out the day and would spend like 15-20 minutes wandering the tank.

but IMO they were pretty interesting critters to watch.
i never had any other centuroides other than hentzi, so i dont know how the others act.

my current goal is to find some different types of african bark scorpions (B.jacksoni, hottentotta, or uroplectes)
does anybody know of any i missed?

Awesome, I just didn't know squat about this species but have been eyeballin' them at Kens' as they are just gorgeous!! I think they are not as common in the trade as well, but I don't know for sure on that either. Sure would be nice if someone on here got some and posted up their experiences.. hint, hint, hint! I was torn but just ordered some P. Liosoma's instead Very Happy

Well I've just recently started keeping them, but they aren't any different from tropical Centruroides species. Humidity, vertical climb, done Smile I've heard they grow kinda fast too.
