The non-native ones can thrive in our environment and that would be very bad to the ecosystem. They would be considered non-native invasive species. By the way, I just recently saw an episode on Discovery Science called "Monster Bug Wars" and unfortunately a large mantis killed and ate this exact stick insect Evil or Very Mad
I honestly think they set that match up and filmed it. It's no different than from those Japanese bug fights--just has better camera work.

Pretty sweet stick there. Very Happy

As far as not being able to keep them, the US government has them on the list of things that you need special permits to keep. (I was part of a group that kept and raised these, but man, those permits were a pain!)

Part of the reason is that their diet is non-specialized (anything in the rose family, which includes a lot of ornamentals and a lot of fruit trees) and they're parthenogenic, so a single specimen escaping could start a whole new population.

Really cool pets. I've wanted to house a mantis, but I see a lot of mix reviews about buying them online.

Very beautiful walking sticks and nice set up too!

Mike do you know where you could find a listing of such? Where there any scorps or T's on it? I did some searching and came up dry earlier. Came up with the only thing being prohibited are endangered or protected species. Sizes of some reptiles vary from city to city too.

haha i think its kind of stupid that every state and even cities have different laws. its hard for me to understand why they would do that. For example in some places you cant have a pool in your back yard . thats just stupid why would you prohibit something like this

Yeah it is goofy. It gets even worse when people try to created gated and closed communities. Some of the differences though are because of the size of the country. Most States technically function as their own entities and are the size of a lot of other countries. Thus the name of the Country I guess Very Happy But it gets goofy too like 30 min. south in Oshkosh I can have snakes I think up to 6' in town without a permit and here in Appleton my Ball Python may be illegal because it is bigger than 3.5 feet. I was very surprised to hear that one, especially after I had the snake! But I'm moving soon or else I wouldn't have posted that Very Happy

Not very no, wish it was some place warm but then I'd probably have to take baby mama drama back to court which is expensive and no fun and definitely not good for the little guy!

Shawn, all that's on it is the whole of order Phasmatodea (walkingsticks and leaf insects). No arachnids are regulated by APHIS.

The officials I've spoke with mentioned some exotic mantids had been added, but I don't know which families.
