hello, new to the hobby

Hi all, names jim, I'm from wisconsin, the greenbay area. I currently have an unsexed adult emperor scorpion, who i'm having fun with but, i was wondering if there's another kind that i could get that's less of a pet hole, the only tank i have currently is an empty 55 gallon. so my question is what would be the best non-pet hole kind that i could get reasonably easily? also if the 55 gallon is to big, what would be an easy diy tank to build, i do have experiance in carpentry so that should help out, lol. thanks in advance for any responses.

Since youre new to the hobby and want one thats less of a "pet-hole" I would definitely suggest getting a Hadrurus Arizonensis (desert hairy). Theyre relatively easy to care for, quite agressive, and very active. My H. Arizonensis is my most active scorpion and by far my favorite species. Not to mention you can usually get them for a reasonable price.

and, they are only about as venomous as your emp, but you are more likely to get stung. there a lot more aggressive than an emp, probably because of the tiny claws.

Welcome! I would not waste such a big tank on a scorpion .You can pretty much make an enclosure that is smaller and more managable out of any box type container.If you want something you can keep in groups that is a little hotter I would go with C.gracillis(spelling??) or another Centruiroides.

Hey SilentJim - Welcome to the forum, I'm from Wisco too. I am in Appleton and actually work in GB! If you want to start with scorplings you can have as many Hoffmanius/Vaejovis Spinigerus as you want for free When they get bigger they are fun to watch. The are a 2 on the toxicity scale so they pack a slightly larger wollup than an emp but still not medically significant. They are also very fun to watch, a lot more aggressive feeders and they use their sting. They are an arid/semi-arid species too so the set up is much easier to maintain than a tropical species in my opinion. Let me know if you are interested. Otherwise if you find any good shops up by you with scorps let me know. I resolved in online business for all of mine as I couldn't find anything. There are a few other species at a shop in Appleton - Just Pets. The H. Spin babies are from me there, there is also a C. Vittatus which might not be a bad idea for you, they are a 2 on the scale also.

lol nice to have another member close by, I acutally got my emperor from a petco on east mason in green bay, they must get the pretty often cuz they had a sub-adult when i went back there for more crickets. The devil scorp's look like they'd be more active, what kind of set up would you recommend for them?and how long do they usually live? i used to have a couple ball python's but an ex-gf took them, so i always like having unusal stuff. I'll put up some pics a little later tonight but its not much too look at.

You can also try sectioning off the tank you have and keep multiple species in there. Just an idea.

where is the heat mat (if there is one)? because it cant be on the bottom of the cage.

There is a red light so there should not be a mat unless you want cooked scorpion.

yea no heat mat, i do have one but its not on the tank because i think the IR blub looks better

I have found that the heat lamps dry out my tropical set ups and use them as supplementary to a heat mat on the side of the tank. Just make sure you put the mat on the side, or bark and not on the bottom. Also, probably not right next to a burrow either I'll see if I can add some links to some pics I have posted on this forum with my H. Spin set ups. For the babies I keep them in condiment containers until they get bigger and if you wanted some I'd just give you the container and all so you wouldn't have to worry about a set up for a little while. Right now they are 2i so they are tiny!

Adults I use sand/coco fiber mix, I keep a water dish in there and fill it up every couple of days. If I keep a lamp on them and keep them around 80-95 degrees and with the lamp the ambient humidity is fine. It usually sits around 40-50% I believe.

Adults get crickets or roaches 1 or 2x a week or as they want, and the babies I feed either 1/2 a cricket or pinhead crickets 2 or 3 times a week and squirt a little water in the cup about 2x a week. I'll post up those links tonight hopefully.

wow those are some awesome looking scorplings, if you don't mind parting with a couple they look like they'd be awesome starter desert scorps. Yea the IR bulb does dry it out kinda quick over where the light is but i just add water a lil more frequntly and it seems to do the trick. Just send me a pm sometime i'm usually online anytime after 5 or 6ish. and ty for all the input everyone. and ty its my buck knife for cutting up fake plants an stuff, lol.

Definitely, I'll shoot you a pm tonight with contact info. I have to do a count again but only have 5 spoken for so I should have at least 15-18 left up for grabs. I'm assuming that is more than enough, so just let me know whatever you want to start out with. They are easier to house at this stage but splitting up a 5 or 10 gallon tank is relatively cheap and easy.

Anything to feed someones addiction (as long as it is not harmful to ones health that is )
