If you are talking about a black light don't shine it except for only a few minutes at a time thhey do not need (any light) and a blacklight is more dangerous to you, even with short exposure,it is still very harrmful to the scorp with longer exposure.Best to keep him/her in a darkish area with a completly dark period.

| red heat lamps dont emmit uv and the scorps cant see red but theres a problem with holding humidity with lamps. you're better off with a regular heat matt. uv rays are harmful to scorps (because they are nocturnal) and prolonged exposure will keep them in burrows and hides and most likely kill them | |

That's fine ,no or very little uv is emitted! They can't see red, just keep a water bowl filled and pour water into the substrate when it drys out.

| My guess is it will harm your scorpion if exposed to UV radiation for long periods of time. UV radiation already damages larger organisms like humans and is said to be even more harmful to small animals and plants. Infrared heat lamps are a good source of heat for your scorpions. | |

| uv light is very bad for scorps it can shorten there life dramatically if exposed to it for long periods of time, also if your using a heat lamp make sure its infrared and not just painted red glass as the normal red bulbs still emit some uv
its ok to use uv for short periods on rare occasions but probably best to avoid it altogether really

| Ha just responded to a post similar to this. I apologize if this is not new, in that case please disregard but in the event that there may be some use in this please read on. I second everyone on here with the infrared and not using anything else including black lights due to the uv. Short term exposure is unavoidable and not the end of the world just don't use one all the time or for more than a little viewing or when needing to do maintenance. I wanted to comment and add to what Ironman posted. - ironman wrote:

I agree with this, a lot of mats don't work the greatest though and that is why a lot of folks on here don't care too much for them. I won't bother with them for arid species but use them in combination with a lamp for the more topical set up. I will crank the heat on the mat and use the lamp to supliment the mat and hit my target temperature. The lamp will suck the moisture out of the tank though. You may need to cover part of the top if it is a screen lid to help keep moisture in just watch for mold while doing this. If your tank is big enough you may want to consider a false bottom set up. Good luck with the new additions
