Emp housing issue's Empty
PostSubject: Emp housing issue's   Emp housing issue's Empty10/2/2010, 6:14 pm

I thought emp's were colonists as my 2 young black emp's don't share the same burrow, one of them has happily (I assume, as I haven't seem it for some time) made it's burrow under the piece of bark i put in there for them, and the other one just sits on top of the substrate, near the heat mat, sometimes he climbs onto a label on the front of the mat, which i understand means the substrate is to dry but I am concerned that if I make the existing burrow more damp for the emp that stays near the heat mat, the emp that currently lives in the burrow wont like it. Is it common for emp's to like different living situations?? Or should I just create 2 burrows??? Am looking to introduce 2-3 more emp's in the future.

Take my advice in stride until you hear from one of the more experienced members, but from what I know...

If your substrate is to dry, then both emps will suffer regardless of where they are living. Make conditions perfect (or as close as you can) and they will adapt.

It is common for all scorpions (even the same type) to have different preferences. Some are active, some aren't. Some burrow, some do not. So if your emps are not living together, it's not a bad sign on the surface, it just might mean they are different, or too lazy to make enough room.

Just be sure that you have (with 2 scorps) atleast 2 (preferrably, and reccomended, 3) hides. Remember the rule. +1 burrow more than you have scorps.

If you are getting concerned, you can create a starter burrow by digging a tiny bit into the dirt yourself.

I did think was one hide enough, but if the substarte was too dry then they both would be on the surface, wouldn't they??

Not necessarily. If it's too dry, some might attempt to burrow to escape the heat, or to get some mositure from the dirt.

From what I've learned of scorpions, all you can really control is their environment. Ensure your substrate is moist (if you squeeze it and it holds its shape, you're perfect) and the heat is correct, and they will make their own choices to living conditions.

Deff add another hide, incase that one fella is staying up there to avoid being "bullied".

I know that the substrate to the left of the viv near the heat mat is alot more moist than where the burrow is to give more of a moisture gradient, pos too moist as there is always alot of condensation. But have just double checked the substrate near the first burrow and it is as you say, it stays together when you squeeze it. Maybe they just like different conditions.

Just wetten the substrate and it'll be fine. Pour a glass worth of water onto the substrate.

You want at least one hide per scorp, no need for you to create the burrows - they'll do that themselves. You just need to provide something for them to burrow under.

Yes I do, It's a wooden viv with 2 sliding glass doors, I was informed they are better than glass ones as they hold the heat better???

Very odd mate.

Some immediate advice... take the heat mat, slap it on the outside of the glass (on the sides or back, not underneathe), or pretty soon you'll have some cooked critters.

+1

Thought that a bit weird and dangerous, hoe big is the viv u might want to consider a heat lamp instead?? If the wood is quite thick it may mot let much heat through

The wood is too thick to get sufficient heat through. Temp range is fine between 30-35c. I do have a heat lamp as well, but only mainly use that to help with keeping the humidity up for short periods at a time, and observin them with out havin to shine a light in the viv. Since puttin the second hide in they both haven't emerged for sometime now, you can see the second one in the hide, on top of the substrate, he hasn't attempted to burrow, but there is always alot of condensation on the glass and walls which tells me there's plenty of moisture in the viv????

My man, you don't want that viv to go much above 30.5C on the warm side... they're likely going to start burrowing like mad to escape the heat.

If there is condensation on the side, you're humidity is a little high, but generally better than too low.

Def take the heat Matt out if the tank... If you use an infrared heat bulb it can be on all the time if needed, you don't want to be using any bulbs that are amiting uv as it's harmful to scorps... Also temp should be between about 24 + 30 c not any hotter really

Not all emps burrow they are all different our male has never burrowed yet are female burrows like mad

You say if there is condensation on the walls the humidity is too high, but the humidity gauge reads 50%??? The heat mat is covered by a piece of bark, which i spray with water to keep moist, which too should help with the humidity.

Humidity gauges are rarely accurate and as far as I'm aware heat matts should not get wet or come into any contact with moisture.... Our gauge always reads between 50-70 but the humity is fine.... Misting isn't really affective try dumping a cup of water on the substrate once or twice a week as well
