Hi, we have a 75w infrared bulb heating our viv and it tends to sit around 30-32 degrees C , is this too hot?

If the lamps off it falls to about 20 and pretty much as soon as it's on it's crept bk up to 30 will just have to keep an eye on it... No wonder she's been burrowing like a maniac lol

Ideally, you want the temps to stay within this boundary: 25-30
28-29 is the optimal temp.

you can try distancing the lamp a bit.

You can also try getting a Rheostat or lamp with a dimmer, that way you can control the heat. I prefer the dimmer as it's one less connection and a couple of rheostats I have make a little buzzing noise.

You could always go with a lower watt bulb and if you need to move the lamp closer since it's as far away as possible right?

I personally like to get higher wattage bulbs though and use a dimmer or rheostat so I can turn them down. I have flexibility this way to turn the heat up a bit for winter. I'm overly concerned as well because my scorps are near windows.

Here are a couple of examples of what I have used. I splurge for the lamps a bit because of the porcelain, although you can find similar lamps for 1/3 the cost at hardware stores with plastic ends. I'm sure these exact things might not be as affordable or even available where you are but hopefully they give you some ideas.

It's inside the enclosure? Mine is placed on top of the mesh top.

Oh, I didn't even catch that, yeah, I keep mine on the outside, anything touches a lamp it could get burned pretty easy. If you want you could post some pictures of the set up, everybody on here seems to be pretty constructive and willing to lend suggestions.

we thought about putting it on top of the mesh but worried it would heat it up and melt the plastic that crosses the top...at the moment all we have is a ceramic connector/fitting hanging in the corner we dont have a lamp will post couple of pics to show you what i mean.... also i put a towel over the top to keep the humidity up, without the towel it wont stay anywhere near 70

Actually, I don't see any harm in the way the light is set up this way as it seems to be high enough away from everything inside the enclosure. And as far as setting the light directly on the mesh; I worried about the same thing and keep mine suspended off of the top a little bit. Don't want to burn my place down.

If you keep this set up, I'd think the solutions would really remain the same other than raising the lamp higher; using a rheostat, looking for a fixture with a dimmer, or a lower wattage bulb. The 1st two would be ideal as you would have more control over the temperatures. The latter would be adequate if the temperatures in your house are consistent through out the changing seasons.

Again I'm still a noob myself but these are my thoughts. I also recall seeing your set up on another thread, maybe regarding locks. Sorry if I am repeating myself but I like your set up. Definitely something you can sit and stare at for a while Very Happy

Thank you! I could stare at it constantly if the scorps would come out to play lol... Kinda wish we had got something a bit more active but can always get more lol.... Unfortunatly as of yesterday the set up is a bit wrecked as we had a burrow cave in which sunk the hide so had to remove the hide to make sure it wasn't blocking the hole.... As far as the light is concerned I hve no idea where to get a fitting with a dimmer Sad and the lowest wattage bulb I've found is 50w so might try that first see how that goes, at the moment I'm just having to turn it off and on our baby is in a seprare container which sits on top of the viv and the only heat that gets is from being on the viv.

32 degrees is on the warmer end of what they need to be honest. but this will do them no harm it would just encorage burrowing and hiding. your scorp will be more active at this tempreature. i have the same hieght tank as you, and i use a 50 watt bulb and it keeps the tank at 28 degrees. (optimal tempreture). analogue humidity meters are very inaccurate. but when their under an infared lamp they will read lower than they should. if you turned your lamp off for half hour you will find that the hummidty meter will read 80%.

yeah, I would just downgrade the wattage and see what you get from it. If that doesn't work, return the bulb and try another.

About the first bulb:
When you place your hand in the enclosure, is it uncomfortably hot? Or is it a nice warm sensation?
How is the temperature being measured? At the top, middle, or bottom? I and many other members have found that thermometers usually don't work as well as we'd like them to.
About how many gallons would you say is your tank?

For my 10 gallon tank I used a 75W bulb that I placed on the mesh top and had no issues.
It also seems from the pictures that if your scorpions wanted to, they'd move to the left side if it was too hot. Your tank seems more than large enough for that and ideal for a 75w bulb as well.
I just don't want you going out and getting a new bulb if it may not be needed.

Doesn't feel uncomfortably warm although I wouldn't wanna sit in there lol.... Think we worked out it's about 28 gallons the thermometer hygrometer is at the bottom/middle of the back of tank.... I think it's prob ok as they have burrowed to the center of the tank anyway and like u said if they was that bothered there is hide on the otter side.... Just want to get it right though don't want to be making there lives uncomfortable .... However from what people have said on here my thermometer is probably not correct anyways lol

I have the same motto. In my freezing Canada-land (its not that cold most days) my house sits around 20 C. My tank (on the hot side) is generally about 28 (it's on the low end, I know) - currently adding a small heating pad for that extra 4 C bump.

My scorp has the habit on warm days to chill out on the cool side, and on cold days, right under the lamp.

She's healthy and happy as a clam.

That's what I like about scorps. Unlike my monitor (when it was a baby) they are smart enough to go where it's comfortable.
