PostSubject: Our P.Imp and Enclosure   9/5/2010, 10:10 am

Hi All,

Here is a Pic of our Scorpion, We got him last Saturday, Don't know how old he is, but due to the colour of his telson, and reading info on here we believe he is an adult? is that right?

He's currently in a smallish plastic tank - we are waiting for a female to arrive, so we can put them in a new enclosure...

Any comments/Tips/Help welcome!! (Currently a n00b)

Thanx

As for infrared lamps I just started buying higher wattage and also a rheostat, this way I can turn it down to nothing and will be able to adjust the temperature throughout the changing seasons. A cheaper alternative is to use a lamp with a dimmer on it and throw in a higher watt bulb. I'm not the most experienced on here so maybe someone has some better thoughts but so far so good here and we have all 4 seasons so it gets hot as all get up and very humid in the summer and very cold in the winter!

Down side of the lamps is they dry your enclosure out in my opinion and I try to use mats on my tropical viv's and lamps on my desert or dryer viv's. You may just have to make sure you keep the substrate wet enough and mist regularly if you use a lamp for a tropical set up. I haven't found a heat mat worth much though either and am trying a ceramic heat bulb along with a mat not quite sure if dry's it out any less though.

Probably the best advice is try to do what sounds most logical or has the most success stories from people on this site and monitor it for a few weeks. If you are in the UK there are different products available to you I'm sure also. Fortunately there seems to be quite a few very knowledgeable individuals from the UK on this site. Also do a little searching on here this is a very popular topic and Emps by far seem to be the most popularly talked about species. Looks good so far and it sounds like you are getting things straight before moving the little guys in. Good job and congrats on the new family additions!

When I get into something I always do my homework, sometimes with much overkill, the value of saying this is that I have been very impressed with the knowledge I have learned and gained on this forum and the amount of knowledge a lot of people posses on here. Also the eagerness to share knowledge and help everyone out, you are definitely in the right place and don't feel shy about asking any questions!

Yes, he is an adult - that's the problem with getting an adult, yes you don't have to worry about molting but you cannot guarantee that the one you get won't die on you as it could be 2 years old or it might be 5,6, even 7 years old.
I'm sure it'll be fine though Smile

Hope all goes well with the bulb and the new addition.

As for the mat, I have always found "habistat" heat mats to be the best. If you had an exo-terra heat mat, then that might be why it didn't work.
Also, I see you have a foam background? So the heat probably wasn't able to pass through that and into the tank.

Thanx for all the help and comments, the foam is actually on the outside of the tank as didnt want it on the inside lol and was putting the heat Matt on the side have tried 2 and neither really worked none of them was a habistat though, so may have to check them out i think, just checked and the bulb I have ordered is a 75w so should be enough i hope, Females not coming till after Tuesday some time so got time to make sure everything is perfect. Also wondered if you can get proper locks for these exo terra terrariums instead of just the catch thingy it has as I have 2 kids aged 2+5 and worry about them opening it.

I liked the looks of the exoterra terrariums and loved that lock feature, you have the little holes that you can put a lock on there correct?

I don't have an exo terra but have a couple of Critter Cages with the (assuming) same type of lock feature. I just used some small master locks used for traveling, suite cases and such. I have a 4 year old and that is a concern of mine too. He does good with my Heterometrus Spinifers and Hoffmanius Spinegerus but I have a lock on my Hottentotta Trilineatus enclosure and on the ball pythons enclosure as well. Eventually I would like to get a lock on all of them but couldn't afford to get all new enclosures. My Tarantula's currently don't have locks either.

If your enclosure does not have the set up to use a lock (although I thought all Exoterras did) I'm not sure what could be done. maybe check out a hardware shop and look for some options.
