Communal setup Empty
PostSubject: Communal setup   Communal setup Empty8/23/2010, 3:04 pm

So after many times of making plans to order some more scorps and having to cancel those plans, I finally have the money set aside for that purpose. I have an empty 10gal, a lot of sand, and a lot of rocks. Im hoping to get a communal desert species. Ive been looking into V. Spinigerus but Ive heard mixed reviews about keeping them communally. Has anyone here ever had positive or negative experiences with it? If its not recommended, what other desert species in the 20-40$ range would do well in a 10gal with lots of sand and rocks?

You can try Centruroides sculpturatus

These guys pack a punch in their venom, but are great communal scorps and nice display pets. They need vertical hides which I think is even better. Due to how common they are, they are usually pretty cheap. Tarantula Inc has them for sale and so does kenthebugguy
Here's their care: http://www.care-sheet.com/index/Centruroides_sculpturatus

You can also try Hottentotta hottentotta

Well actually I already have a C. Sculpturatus and Im looking for something new. Ive decided on getting an H. Arizonensis for the 10gal but Im still looking for ideas on a relatively cheap, small, aggressive, desert species that I could keep in a small to medium critter keeper. And relatively cheap would mean 20$ or less. Where I plan on getting the H. Arizonensis they have V. Spinigerus for 10$. Are V. Spinigerus an easy species to keep when kept alone and how aggressive are they?

Are you going through Kens? I just ordered 3 V. Spins. First couple weeks of them in a 10 gal with 6+ burrows went really well until last night. I was cleaning out cricket heads and legs and found a telson Sad I'm still bummed about it! Long story short, I just got back from getting a 5.5 gal and some black sand (woot!) as well as some plastic to cut up and aquarium glue to put a divider in the 5er. I will separate my remaining 2 V. Spins. I'm going to try and order some H. Trilineatus's tonight to fill the 10gal I have set up for a communal tank. (Anyone have any suggestions for the care of those or feel that they are not good for a communal set up, please let me know, everything I have read so far is looking good)

I wouldn't recommend trying V. Spins communally based on my bad luck. I read 50/50 reviews too and started breading dubias so I didn't think I would be short on food or space and one of my lil' guys still got taken down. He was the smallest, but seemed to have the most personality, always busy and cruisin' around.

I'm some what of a noob but think the V. Spins are pretty easy to take care of. They eat very well, are pretty aggressive/active. One of mine tried tagging the forceps when I first got them and was putting them in the enclosure. They are definitely cool little guys.

Thanks for the reply. As of right now I plan on going through tarantulainc but if I can manage another 20$ then I will deffinately be going through Ken in order to get some more Dubia. A family friend gave me about 30 a couple weeks ago and Ive counted about 15 more than what I had, but it will still take a while to get a sustainable food source. I have a quick question for you though, what are Ken"s shipping costs?

Shipping from what I could tell was variant on where you live. If you want a good idea just go on his site, add what you are looking for to your cart and hit check out, it will figure the shipping based on your address before you pay so you can find out the shipping and then exit out. I just did it again for the order I want to place tonight. You also have a couple of options, express or overnight, the latter of which Ken does a Live Guarantee which I did and would probably recommend but it does add a little extra cost as well.
I looked on that site and it seems the T's are a bit cheaper than Kens but Ken has more scorps and seems to be a little cheaper on that side. I'm sucking up the bit of difference on the T I want so I can order everything from him as I want a handful of scorps too, and I was very please with my experiences with him thus far. I have heard good things about TarantulaInc though too.

Well thanks Im deffintely going to go try that. So if the shipping is right then I'll probably go through him. And tarantulainc is great. I ordered my first scorp and T from there. Unfortunately the T (which was only a sling) managed to escape, but a year later my scorp (C. Sculpturatus) is still as healthy and active as the day I got her.
