E. Flavicaudis care/enclosure? Empty
PostSubject: E. Flavicaudis care/enclosure?   E. Flavicaudis care/enclosure? Empty9/12/2010, 4:55 am

I'm living in the south of France and have captured what I am almost certain is an E. Flavicaudis. There's no known problem with thinning scorpion populations down here as far as I know, and I'll be moving within the year so it'll be released then at worst. I just want to keep it around to observe it.

I have it in a converted Candarel jar (this is a circular jar, 8cm in diameter and about 20cm tall) with nine small air-holes in the lid. I put about a half inch of (fairly dry) dirt on the floor, along with a twig and a piece of terra-cotta angled such that it can use it to hide from any light in the room. I'm not using any special heating equipment, I keep the windows open in here and don't have air-conditioning, so I figure the normal room-temperature should be what it needs. I cleaned out a bottle of nasal spray and filled it with water, I give its jar a couple of spritzes a day to keep the humidity up.

I have yet to feed it, but I'm planning on just catching small flies and other insects and giving it one or two a week, is this a good idea?

Am I doing anything wrong? Does it need more substrate, more moisture? More space? Should I get a hygrometer?

Hi,
I currently breed some E. flavicaudius, they're very nice.

From my personal experience, i can tell you:

1) You could get a bigger cage, above all if your scorp is adult so you can have a dry part and a wet one. They die quickly if its not humid enough and I have noticed they like to spend some time on a dry soil and some on a wet one. I would also add a little bowl of water.

2) They're not very good at catching things, above all if they fly. So i would suggest not to give them flying animals (u can use them if they can't fly anylonger...).

Personally, i don't like flies because they can be very dirty and carry bacteria and other bad things for your scorp. Maybe you can try some small beettle, worm, etc.

Hope it helps Smile

Thanks, I'll drop by the pet store tomorrow and pick up a small fish-tank or something.

As for what you said about food, I've got a grasshopper in there right now and it came pretty close to catching it, but you're right flying insects are definitely out of the question (if only because they could just cling to the roof of the jar, the walls of which the scorp is unable to scale).

Thanks again, though.

Just one more thing: if you don't breed its food but just catch it outside (as I think you do), pay attention that if someone has used bug spray on your scorpion's food... your scorpion can very well die.

So catch the food where u are sure people don't use bug spray, etc. etc.
