Humidity and mold question. help Empty
PostSubject: Humidity and mold question. help   Humidity and mold question. help Empty7/2/2010, 1:20 pm

Hello,

Just a few quick questions here, any help/knowledge would be great.

1. Can humidity ever be too high for emperors scorps?? I have been reading quite a bit on the web, and many sites says that humidity is too high if condensation forms on the sides of the glass terranium. I have a false bottom set up, there is always condensation on the side walls, the hydrometer reads ~80% humidity, however I believe the humidity inside their burrows is much higher. I always thought since they are from the rainforest, the higher the humidity, the better. What are your thoughts??

2. How dangerous is mold to emperors scorps? I have set up the terranium so that the burrows faces the glass wall. I have noticed that sometimes the scorps leave droppings inside their burrow. Because of the high humidity, I'm afraid that mold will eventually form. It's not that I don't want to clean the droppings, it's just that I don't want to constantly disturb them or mess up their burrows.

Thanks in advanced! Great forum!

Welcome!

1. Personally, no, I don't think humidity can ever be too high for this species. For others, yes, their exos can become a bit soft and can get a bit elasticated.

In my experience, emps will only molt (or give birth) when they feel the conditions are sufficient.

Also, hygrometers tend to be quite far off the true reading in the tank and so for future reference for scorps I wouldn't recommend getting anymore.

2. Mold is pretty much harmless to them - Mike used the same substrate in one of his emperor tanks for a couple of years and it ended up growing giant, yellow mushrooms inside it. His emps were as healthy and as happy as ever. Smile

Some like to spot clean just to improve the appearance of the tank.

Note, though, that when those mushrooms show up, it's about time to do a substrate change.

100% humidity means that the partial pressure of water vapor in the air is equal to its vapor pressure in a water / water vapor equilibrium at that temperature.

Or, in other words, water will not evaporate, but additional water vapor introduced will condense.

Or, in yet MORE other words, you'll observe condensation on the walls of the tank. Razz
