Possibly new emp. Empty
PostSubject: Possibly new emp.   Possibly new emp. Empty6/10/2010, 1:11 pm

Hello, my names chris and up until just recently I've solely been into fishkeeping. I started gaining an interest in tarantulas when for some odd reason one was near some fish at a store. I absolutely hate spiders but seemed like an interesting pet/showpiece. Anyway during my research it led me to scorps Razz which I now think I'm much more inclined to deal with and I think are absolutely amazing animals to look at o.o ( I do know this species is the pet hole, just looking for an easy start). At this point I planned on keeping one in a ten gallon with coco fibre, as substrate, a water dish, heat pad on the back and I suppose any ornament that's natural whether that's rock or plant or both. Was just hoping to gain any extra knowledge or get any heads up I can here before going through with the time and money commitment.

everybody says theyre pet holes - docile- boring, but imo it depends entirely on the scorpions temprement - i guess just like in life we have lazy bums, couch potatoes and then you have the workers and the more athletically inclined - i have a communal setup of 6 emperors, and admitedly 4 of wich i dont see as often as the other 2 that are ssmingly always out and about. scorpions are noctournal - another overlooked theory of mine is that perhaps theyre never seen because theyre all looking at the wrong time - wait till night (y'know seems obvious - them been noctournal) and as soon as it goes dark in my house theyre all out up against the doors trying to escape

thay say a happy scorpion is a hidden scorpion

So i've picked up a twenty gallon aquarium I got from a friend for real cheap. Need to pick up a screen for the top, was going to get 3 bricks of the coconut fiber substrate(hopefully it'll be enough), a shallow water dish, some sort of rock formation or similar shaped ornament mainly to help making a burrow, was thinking about a fake plant but i've heard pothos plants are nice and easy to take care of in there?, all i'm unsure of is what sort of heat source to use. I'm leaning towards a ceramic right now after first thinking of a mat...just want some other peoples opinions on the comparison between mats, ceramic, and infared bulbs? To keep humidity up i was going to just keep the substrate moist rather than misting as well...

I'd go with infrared bulb. Ceramic heat emitters can be pricey and heat mats haven't worked well for me.
For the 20 gallon, you can use a 75W or higher and place it on one side of the tank.

I actually found a local reptile store that has 100w ceramics I was going to pickup for just $25.00 so I'm hoping to begin setting everything up soon
