PostSubject: Your Pet Scorpion Mannerisms   4/26/2010, 12:06 am

Hey guys!

I find comfort knowing there's others who share this fascination of scorpions, helps me feel less crazy Smile.

I have a collection of 5 scorpion species right now: Asian Forest, Emperor, Flat Rock, Desert Hairy, and Arizona Bark. As I've observed them I've noticed that they all have their own tendencies (obviously), mannerisms, characteristics.. I'll share a little about what I've observed and then I'd love to hear about others as well.

Flat Rock - She's a rather flinchy when she hears me tinkering around the cage, doesnt eat, and just chills under her rock

Asian Forest - She's much more aggressive than my Emperor! I also have to clean her water dish daily cuz she tends to just sit in it and drag in a bunch of substrate with her. As I was spraying her tank for humidity I sprayed directly on her and realized she actualy enjoyed it and watched as her mandibles expanded out to absorb the water.

Emperor - Gentle giant.. just chills in his hiding place. I've noticed how he will sometimes catch a coackroach/cricket that wanders into its hiding place and then lets it go? Not hungry i suppose?

Desert Hairy - He's very Active and enjoyable to observe, he'll dig like a dog and hunt crickets like a pro. Doesnt like tinkering noises around his cage and crawls out of his hiding place to investigate.

Arizona Bark - Smallest of the bunch. But I do need to say they're rather hardcore. I observed one of the larger Bark's holding a single cricket in each separate claw and eating one of them. I'll admit I was pretty impressed. I have 3 of them and they act very similarly to the Desert Hairy (both being from the same habitat of course).

Well there you go! Would love to hear about othes as well!

2 emps

Male loves to dig deep and sit in the cave, pretty chill and timid. Hasn't eaten in over a month

Female Very aggressive! Takes advantage of the males digging skills and shares his den. Always hungry, up to eat almost every night.

Yep! Each and every scorpion is different in terms of behaviour. That's why you can get really aggressive scorps that are meant to be really docile and vice versa. It just depends on the individual.

both of my female emps have a temper that seems to come and go...
sometimes i can reach right in and scoop them up (showing them to people or moving tanks or cleaning)
other times...well...i just leave them alone lol
ive been stung and pinched multiple times since ive owned them, and im not in a hurry to let it happen after the last pinch i got...

i just kept irritating it...
it took alot to not squash it, cause it kept pinching, but eventually it reached out and tapped me on the top of my hand...
it hurt the first time, cause it made serious contact with me, but every other time since than, it doesnt really bother me...
sometimes when im ina hurry to move them to fix something or clean up the tank (cause mine make a big mess of crickets) i just grab them from the top and they usually always touch me with their stinger...ive had several little red spots on my palms from them

My Desert Hairy pretty much re-arranged my whole strategic dispersion of dirt in my desert set up and set things up how he wanted... that thing burrows like crazy!

By dirt I'm assuming you mean sand and not coco fibre?
