PostSubject: false bottom for a large tank!   false bottom for a large tank! Empty4/26/2010, 8:53 am

After posting a message about finding a tank I brought the conversation up about the future pets I plan to get (2emps) with my neighbours, just in case they might be concerned false bottom for a large tank! 8072 . After being asked if I was crazy a few times Suspect (I guess it’s not the typical pet a 20 year old girl would want) they offered me an old tank roughly four feet long, two feet deep and two feet tall. Immediately I started planning a fantastic tank in my head and said yes only later to think how the hell I am going to keep control of the climate scratch ! I decided a false bottom was proberly my best bet and I read a bit on different ways to build one. But this tank is huge compared to what I’ve seen them built in. Anyone have any suggestions on how to build one in such a large tank? If I could get this up and running it could look fantastic with plenty off room to build my happy little scorp family I love you !

use rocks, gravel, pea rocks, etc....
a piece of PVC pipe in one corner to fill the reservoir,
and get a piece of screen to fit the length and width of the rocks so the substrate doesnt fall in the water/rocks (this is my mistake, i didnt wanna wait till i had the screen)

make sure when you do it that you have the tank stable and somewhere you're gonna like it, cause it gets rather heavy...

after your satisfied with the depth of the rocks, and you put enough substrate to allow burrowing in the event that it happens, you can begin decorating...

my mistake in mine was that i put too much water in it and it seeped up to the top of the substrate, making it look more like a swamp than a forest floor...

but the other night i got so bored i tore the whole tank apart and removed all the substrate and strained it out drying it...i did this also because i wanted to re-decorate and make it better...
i will be posting pictures sometime today, i just have to remember where i placed my camera...

if you have anymore questions, just post them =)

Thanks mikey. Ive seen a couple of displays which use egg crate would this work as the screen? Also any ideas on how i could hide this from the outside view of the tank? Very Happy

Egg Crate= plastic griding used for lights with about 1cm square holes in it.

theres a dude named Bjaeger on here who has that, but you'd have to ask him...
i personally go with whats easiest and the neighborhood i live in, everyone has rocks that run around the perimeter of there houses...so theres an abundance here =)

all i did with mine is make 1 layer of rocks
(i used to have 2, but i didnt like it)
as soon as i get money back from college im sending off for more substrate and going to the hardware store for a sheet of screen to go over it when i completely re-do it....

but heres mine for the time being...
