PostSubject: just got baby emperor   just got baby emperor Empty4/13/2010, 9:59 pm

hey i just got a new emperor scorpion a few days ago, and i was just looking for any helpful hints or tips to feeding or caring for it, i will be posting a pic on the sexing bulletin soon to figure out what gender he/she... it is lol. but any thing is appreciated.

right now he is in an approx. 20-25 gal tank w/ 3" bark floor liner. a small watering dish with solid water for scorpions and a twisted root for him to hide under.cage is as shown in the pic below\/[right]

just got baby emperor 2010-010

thing i was wondering most about were what substrate i should use (ive heard bark isnt very good for them), what/how much heat should i use if any, if the water source i use (solid, for use for crickets spiders ect) is appropriate, and also i was thinking of using a paper towel or toilet paper role and burying it so he can use it as a burrow.

also any other info tips are welcome thank you!

you should use coco fiber for the substrate...about 6 - 8 inches...
and id give it a bigger hide to hide under, unless it burrows in the substrate...
but thats just my opinion

different substrate for sure. More moisture.
Use real water, he wont drown if its shallow/he can climb out.
can use a paper roll, a flat rock, anything for burrow really. make a couple for him to have fun with.
for heat use either a heatlamp(red) or a heatmat ( I use laps because I have plants )

But change the substrate ASAP to allow him to burrow and to make the place more moist. Search around the forum, read up.

Other than that Enjoy your new pet Very Happy

thanks for all he info guys, im changing it to day when i can, although one more question about the substrate, what is the best? ive heard coco fibre, peat, just plain soil, Pure vermiculite (which i guess is a clay?) and scorpion substrate bought from a store. which of these do you think would be best and where could i find them? iv looked at the shop i got him at and there is just bark and sand.

thanks again!

you can order coco fiber from a variety of places online (if you want to wait a week)
id use coco fiber, its the most proven substrate that everyone uses (for tropical species)

some people have done 50/50 mixes of coco fiber and peat and its worked really well for them so far...
but i just use straight coco fiber

Yep, you can't go wrong with coco fibre! To increase humidity do not spray as it is ineffective and not long lasting. Just pour some water onto the coco fibre so that it is damp but not soaking and that will give you perfect humidity for 1-2 weeks before repeating the process.

Ensure that you use real water rather than that gel/solid spider water.

You can use pretty much anything as a hide. I would advise against a toilet roll because the tank will be humid and the substrate damp and so it will just get soggy and fall apart.

Do a couple of searches on google and youtube for ideas if you can't think of any for a hide.

Corkbark is very good. They burrow underneath it and it looks natural. Another possible option are those cave looking hides.

Here: http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/reptile_cave.php

Pretty much anything will do ( A lot of hides you can half-bury in the substrate)

Hope this helps!

oh right, forgot the soggy part. lol

i used a plastic cup that i cut as a hide and made it look like a hill and put a marble rock as an entrance. lol

get creative, its half the fun
