how will i know when the molting process has started and ended

as far as i know...
they get fat, deny food, and go into hiding...

but thats as far as i know, ive never experienced it

not eating and huge is a good start. But when the molting process may begin, they sometimes sit in there burrow or they may come out and look for things to get it off with. You can tell when they are done very easily.

arent they lighter in color...
as in, not as black as they were with the hardened exoskeleton?

When they are done, you will see the old exoskeleton sitting in there with them. They will look a little lighter and kind of "waxy" in appearance until the new exo hardens.

As far as before, yes, they will look hugely fat, they may hide, not eat, etc. I have one that I have thought was going to start molting for several weeks now, and nothing yet. It isn't an exact science.

i never even noticed anything - i woke up one morn and found what i thought was a dead scorp tilli pickedit uptofindit was just a moult - saying that i hardly ever saw that scorp she hardly ever ventured out but that made it a special treat when i did see her
they say the happiest scorps remain hidden so?

Me too, I have a 4i emperor that has been in premolt now for quite a while and is huge! Last week she refused food and so I got excited, but she has eaten twice since then. But ah well, she will molt eventually.
