Do corn snakes need UV lighting in their enclosures, ive looked it up and everyones syas no cuase they seldom bask but im more concerned with whether theyll be able to absorb calcium without UV lighting. If i dont use UV could it lead to poor bone development etc?

Cheers.

No light is needed for corn snakes. They are nocturnal (hide during the day--active at night). They do need belly heat for digestion--an under tank heat mat (UTH).

Just want to say UTH isnt great for any reptile species its much more preferable to mount heat mats onto the sides of vivariums, as having them under can lead to thermal burns.

if you can control the temperature, it should be alright...
i never had issues keeping my snakes, but i also had a hot side and cold side in the tanks i used

Sorry lol scottish thing, means brilliant Wink

i dont see how an UTH can lead to burns when the heat mats never really get THAT hot Neutral

Heat mat can burn out then this is what happens
Corn snakes and UV? P21-01-10_131801

Even if a thermostat this can happen, the problem with heat mats is they do not raise the ambient temp really, they mainly heat things they touch which means the snake would have to be in contact with the mat to really benefit, which can then lead to a burn out of the mat and severe burns to the snake.

All in all I would sooner use a ceramic on a pulse proportional thermostat as it is munch safer
and more accurate, so all in all more beneficial

ouch...
i dont know what to say about that...
all i know is, i never had a problem from mine...
my only issue is that i had a container filled with water, that my ball pythons loved to sit in for hours on end...

most people will never experience a problem but when it happens its not nice so best to avoid
Iv seen many burns from heat mats, most are much much more mild than this and usually happen because people use mats that fill the entire vivarium so the animals cant get off.

i use a UTH hooked up to a reostat with my kingsnake, to avoid the problem of the snake being in contact with the glass of the tank i taped about 8 layers of newspaper to the bottem of the entire enclosure so he could not get under the newspaper, then i set the reostat so the temp where the UTH was was warm to the touch, not hot. its worked out so far, i also have aspen bedding in the tank

I was planning to keep mines (as a baby) in a large flat exo terra faunarium with a mat underneath andcause theres wee feet on it the mat wont be touching the bottom of the tank directly will this be ok?

aslong as the snake cant come into direct contact with the mat it should be fine
