I'm amazed at the quality of those blacklight pics! It's so hard to get them sharp unless you have a tripod and a scorpion that holds still.

I'm getting my SLR back next week -- what settings were you using on those blacklight shots?

i need a scorpion that holds perfectly still for all my shots, lightsetup and manual focusing takes a lot of time. most of the time, a setup is almost perfect, seconds away from taking the shot and the scorpion moves out of the frame... Mad it takes alot of patience!
a good trick is to place a transparent delicup over the scorpion and turn full photolight on from the back side. after circling the cup for some time, the scorpion will calm and set down facing the camera (away from the light in the back). rough focus and lights can be set thru the transparent delicup. after some time i carefully remove the cup, last focus and light correction and try to take as many shots i can get. usually i get 10-20 good pics out of 200-500 in one session.
most of my pics are taken in a flat bowl (17x13x4") with dark sand/clay substrate, so i'm able to turn and move the whole setup in front of the cam.

settings i used on my blacklight pics:
aperture: 18
shutter speed: 1 - 1.6 sec.
lightsources:
Scorpion Hunter PRO FLOOD II LE - UV Flashlight
or
Ultrafire WF-502B 1W - UV Flashlight

on blacklight shots (shutter >1"!!) it's important to use the mirror up or live view function of the SLR. otherwise, moving the 'heavy' mirror while releasing will shake the camera. i recommend remote release and tripod! Wink

Awesome, thanks for the tips! My camera doesn't have the live preview, but we've got a remote so that should make things a little easier.
