Snake hurting her scales Empty
PostSubject: Snake hurting her scales   Snake hurting her scales Empty7/7/2010, 2:53 am

I recently added some drift wood i found at a lake to my enviroment for my ball python and she seems to be rubbing on the wood backwards and getting what appears to be dirt and wood on the underside of her scales...Its turning her belly slighty brown and its making the scales appear to peal. Should i worry or what? Im sure after a shed it will be fine.

i have seen my geckos do this to get the molt started then peel the rest off, and in my snakes cage it is often stuck in little bits to anything rough... it is normal i think. though its possible she has a small wound that has filled with dirt that she is trying to remove... give her a bath and have a look at the area she is rubbing.

Hi, firstly when introducing any decor from outside into your setups make sure its scrubbed well even boiled, to stop the introduction of pests and parasites into your enclosures. As Jordan said, snakes and lizards usually rub themselves against rougth surfaces to help along shedding, so make sure there are no sharp or overly abrasive edges which can cause the snake harm when rubbed on. Apart from that if there is no damage it should be ok after its next shed.

I boiled it and allowed it to STEW in the boiling water for means of 5-10 minutes or so...Its drift wood, so there is no rough edges

Could be a shed, could be scales rot, could be mites, or could be dirt getting trapped under the scales which can also lead to problems. The safest thing to do is see a vet really.
