I have a 7.5" female emp (purchased Saturday) and just bought a male that's about 5" do you think she will try to eat him?

She is stressed from the move into a bigger terrarium.

I have a piece of wood and a flat rock for hides. A water dish big enough for her and the crickets to chill in. She seems antsy though.she stopped using her hides 2 days ago and if she is not curled up next to the hide or taking a bath she will pace around for hours. I just leave her alone. I thought a companion might help her chill out a bit

Well I just removed everything. the piece of wood I had in there was infested with false scorpions. I threw out the water dish and everything I have a mix of bark chips and coconut husk substrate. For hides I cut a cotton candy container in half...

I put them together and she attacked him pinching his pincher and tail, She climbed on his back and held his pincers with hers, and continued to harass him for about 5 min. He stung her and they are cool now. I was scared that he would die, but now she seems okay with him. Do you think she will do it again?

Could she have just been tryin to see what he is?

Well first of all its best to remove the wood chips cause they hold no moisture and sure no real purpose for emps. Thats sounds like normal and the sting seems to be what they do before mating to make them chill and calm down

(please correct if wrong other people)

there are hardly any chips in the substrate i used those for my false bottom filler. I think she wants to mate but he may be too young

If the male has a dark red telson, then he is mature.

As for mating, they should be reintroduced into the tank, once everything has been moved around to avoid territorial fights, and then a little sparring will happen but they normally mate after that.

His telson is still yellow/white. He is still young and much smaller than she is. Do you think she was just tryin to see what he was, or was she trying to molest him?

I did re arrange everything to the point of all new substrate and hides before I introduced the young male.

Could it have been a dominance thing to show him that she is bigger and stronger?

I am worried she will try to eat him

Well, one thing is for certain - they won't mate.

If you use soil-like substrate then you don't need to change it.

Keep an eye on them, if she is aggressive towrds him again, then you need to think about separating them.

She has been more ill tempered than I know emps to be. I am a noob though I have handled a few. Like I said with him she climbed on him and started harassing him immediately. then she went to his side and grabbed him by the tail and right pincer. It looked like she was gonna pull him apart. After she released him she went around to the front of him, they were both facing each other. They danced around in circles she grabbed his pincer again he stung her, then they locked pincers facing one another, and walked forward and backward locked for about 2 min. It looked like a shoving match or like a dance. The young male kept his tail up most of that time. My daughter thought it was cute...
