Depends on the substrate. If its coco fiber I'd change it biannually (do spot cleaning every so often). If its sand I wouldn't really worry about it (just wipe the poo off the sides and take dead prey items out).

I posted a thread on this a while back . . . basically, I found some two-inch tall mushrooms growing in my tank and thought "well, I guess I ought to do a substrate change."

Coco fiber will eventually decay into soil (as in, after several years of continuous use). Soil just stays soil. You only really need to change it if something foreign starts growing more than is safe or if leftovers start to decay.

soil with crushed bark? seems fine to me. If you get mold just get rid of the layer of mold. And like Bjaeger said just get rid of food items or any rotting matter. I haven't done a substrate change in like 8-10 months.

Crushed bark isn't a very good substrate for burrowing scorps -- what species are we talking about?

And why do you keep posting in the guides / tutorials section? These are just general questions you're asking. tongue

I don't think you have to change the whole substrate. Sometimes I get mold growing so I just take the mold out and leave the rest.

u guys are all saying to remove leftovers but for some reason i cannot find any leftovers at all in my scorpion tank. i dont know forsure if they bring all their food back inside their hide to eat or not.. i even tried lifting up their hide before but they werent really happy with it so i didnt lift it up too long to be able to do a thorough inspection. if leftovers are in their hide though, how should i clean it up without bothering them too much?

if theres some kind of leftovers in the hide, you're not gonna be able to get them without disturbing the scorpions, so id get over that fear now...

my way of doing it is to just open up the hide, and move them around a little (as gently as possible) and take a look while you have them moved...from my experience, as soon as you're done, they'll run right back to the hides as if nothing ever happened..

I just check the substrates in the tank, and don't bother checking inside the actually hides themselves (ie not disturbing them). I have had no problems. Very Happy

but if theres stuff in the hide, wont that mean that parasites are even closer to them, in the case that parasites do grow?

By all means, if you are suspicious that there are parts in the hides, then get rid of them. But i'm talking about I don't open their hide up everytime to see just in case.

most scorpions tend to keep there hides clean, I once gave one of my Old P.imps a meal that was too big a day and a half later I witnessed it carry it out of her burrow and "dispose" of it

I've seen mine go right to the corner of the tank to do their poo and then when finished, return back to the burrow. Very clean animals really. Smile
