PostSubject: Assistance in identification and acquisition: Hottentotta Judaicus spp.   2/4/2010, 6:50 pm

Greeting all,
I recently saw photos posted online of a Hottentotta Judaicus ssp. in the wild that was a deep dark chocolate, almost black with bright reddish orange Aculeus and Cela (except both fingertips, they were black). I have been scouring the web and forums since looking for anyone that can tell me if it is a sub-species and may have this coloration for sale. I am more of an appreciator then a collector and, with the exception of my first pair of P. Imperator, over the last 15 years I have always kept but a single specimen. For the past 6 years I have kept my treasures on my desk in my office ( I have two children at home and have progressed to less “friendly” varieties). While that place of honor is currently occupied by an beautiful L. Quinquestriatus, my addiction seems to be escalating as I feel an obsession to create a second setup to display that beautiful coloration. A picture similar to the one that I stumbled upon can be found at the link below but the color is not near as vivid and widespread (the original was on an Israeli photo contest site I believe and it seems to have since been removed). If anyone could assist with the identification of the exact sub-species or better still a reference for potential acquisition I would be eternally grateful. This is easily one of the most beautiful specimens I have ever seen. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Check out the for sale area. A guy named Ron has some for sale. I sent him a message about his scorpions, but he didn't reply yet.

Note: He lives in Israel, and it might not be legal for him to send us native species.

Not a problem. Rony is his name. He has some interesting stuff, all native to where he lives in Israel. It is fair to mention that shipping to and receiving from over seas isn't as desirable as in the US.

Let me bump in another.. Most of the breeders/importers will have a wide range of Hottentotta during the summer time. I looked at old availability lists, and that seemed to be the trend. Right now everything they have is 75% native to US.

Thanks for the information. I have ordered from Rony previously and have already inquired about his stock. It appears it might just be a naturally occurring color variation in adults and not a separate sub-species. I think the language barrier might be an issue this time with Rony as I am looking for something very specific. He says all of his current HJ are black so I might just take a chance and see what the coloration looks like at full maturity from the native stock. I will keep you all informed.
