Feeding a borrower Empty
PostSubject: Feeding a borrower   Feeding a borrower Empty12/15/2009, 12:54 am

Just got a juvenile emp a couple of weeks ago. He's holed up in a 6 inch burrow that runs at a 45 degree angle.

Before I go buy more crickets, I fed him 3 before he made his burrow, will he sense them if I drop them at the mouth of the burrow or should I 'throw' them right down the hole. I'd like him to become accustomed to coming out for food. Thanks. Great site!!

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but...

As long as your emp is hungry I'm pretty sure he'll be more than able to just snag a cricket as it walks by the burrow, if he's more of a pet hole type of guy. Sometimes though they come out of their burrows and roam around and that'd be a pretty good time to feed him, especially if you wanna watch.

That's pretty normal for emps... they're ambush predators that nab anything that comes too close to their burrow. If he digs a burrow and just hangs out in there you know you're doing somthing right though, so I wouldn't worry.

yeah, I wouldn't worry about it.

They can sense the presence of that cricket easily through vibrations and if your scorp is hungry, that cricket will definitely disappear soon enough.
Also, crickets like going into holes lol

emps are really tempremental when it comes to feeding (most are at least ) they have tendanses to go off food for a while which can be quite aggrevating

well if you get a black light, when your up one night, turn the light on near the hole or from whatever angel you can get and see if its sitting at the mouth of the hole. Every night mine sit at the edge of his house and waits for stuff to walk by ( as it would work in the wild). thats when i convince a cricket to run into his pedipalps.

I wouldnt worry too much about it, if hes hungry, he will come looking, pretty hard to starve an emp to a worrying degree as far as i know

Keep an eye out though in the tank because sometimes they do climb back up while you're not there and then they'll climb/run around in the tank.

I downsized to a 10 gal with two caves as hides. He seems to love one of them. I think the only reason he burrowed so far down originally is because of the piece of junk hide I bought as a newbie(still am one). It let way too much light in.

I wake up a lot at night so I'll keep checking to see if he comes out when he thinks I'm not looking. Very Happy
