Do not know it my photo appears - if it does - what do you see? It is from Crete, Greece. (you might have to copy to the browser...) Can anyone tell me if these scorpions are venomous? Asking because eveyone tells me that my son was in danger when he caught these ones last summer - I believe they are harmless - that there are no venomous scorpions in Europe - not deadly anyway, but I am no expert - just a mom being a bit worried about my sons interests. Hope you experts can help. None of the scorpions were harmed - of course - we just wanted to have a closer look ;-)
Thanks.

Hi, ALL scorpions are venomous. However the potency of venom can vary greatly - bee sting to potential death totally dependant on the species.

After looking at your picture, i'm afraid i can't put my finger on what species that is - i've a few possibilities but i do know that unless he is allergic to the venom, that scorpion would not be life threatening to your son. Would hurt a lot with swelling though.

Hope this helps Smile

Hello Snolder

If you read this site you might get a better idea of what you are looking at when we are talking European scorpions and let me qoute out a little bit of the site

Quote :

Buthidae

This family has three representatives in Europe, which do not overlap in distribution. They are usually found in hot and dry wasteland with sparse vegetation, where they hide in natural burrows under stones etc. during daytime. As in other buthids, the venom is quite strong and sting is very painful. I have not been able to find any reports of deaths or serious cases attributed to European scorpions in the literature, but see the comments in connection with Iurus dufoureius and Calchas nordmanni. The European species seem not to pose any great threat to healthy humans.

What speices of scorpion i would put my fat finger some were in the middle of the Euscorpius genus, sorry but cant ID a Euscorpius closer then guesswork without a microscope Very Happy but these will probly not sting your son even if he picks them up.. But a word of advise scorpion venom like alot of orther venoms react more violently on ppl with less weight, such as small children, so its never a good idea to let smaller kids handle scorpions

and dont worry about being allegic there hasnt been a single sting causing a allegic reaction in history..

Yes I know that it might not have been a good idea. He did not catch them by hand though.
It is difficult to keep him away because it is his biggest interest. He keep saying it was his best holiday ever - just because of this experience.

Guys iam going to take this in danish, if any one feels wronged about this pm me about it and we can resolve it there Very Happy

Hej.

MVH Hanne
