I have a new heating pad on the backside of the 10 gallon tank & a reptile basking light on the right side & I cant get the temp up. Im expecting 2 flat rocks in a couple of days & set up this tank last week. Any ideas? I have temp. gauges on each end, reading 70 degrees or so. Im reading everything on this forum & others saying they need at least 90 degrees. Kim

one way to direct the heat into the tank when using a heat mat is to insulate the heat mat side of the tank with polystyrene.

We have to do this in winter in our house or the heat mats simply lose heat the the cooler room temperature

Polystyrene sheets are available from your local exotic pet / aquatics shop. When they get livestock delivered they usually get loads of it, about 1" thick.

Doesn't look pretty with a lump of polystyrene and tape on the side of the tank but does the trick

Of course the other solution is to get a reflector bulb / infra red light / ceramic light.

heat mats do little for a tank. they are primarily used to provide a heat gradient, so the scorps have a warm side and a cold side. mine never leave the warm side lol!

grab an infrared light, 60-100w. keeps it 75-85 when the rest of the house is 63-70
