Hi all,
Although I know they are both very dangerous, which would you say is the "safest" to keep from a keepers point of view?
I was thinking...aggressiveness.....potency of venom.....willingness to bite.....etc.
Thanks in advance.

you know what I mean.
Spiders for instance.....
There are some that are out and out aggressive and some that are not.
Of course I don't want to get stung but anything is possible. One might be very aggressive.....one might have a better chance of killing you.....antivenin might be more available for one.......

Well since most allegic reactions are caused by the anti venom it would be a bad idea to start having it yourself and try to give it your self, but we are talking scorpions here. They cant claim glass, cant move across a tank the same speed as Ts, easyer to like box up and move around and stuff.. its not like LQs will jump out of the tank flying at your neck..

death stalkers (leirus quinqestriatus) are more aggressive but fat - tails (androctonus sp) much more deadly, potent.

Ehmmm potent meaning stronger venom ? fat-tails have a higher LD50 then LQs so LQs have stronger venom, fat tails aka Parabuthus / Androctonus can deliver more venom then a LQ can

but i didnt say that i would go for LQ, iam just saying that take in mind that you cant really compare scorpions with Ts, because they aint really the same. Both LQ and fat tails can be keept even by a novice keeper if he takes the right messurments when he opens the tank and stuff like that.. ppl are really overracting with scorpions.

If you have to ask these questions, odds are you aren't ready for the scorpions in question.

who said anything about getting the scorpions.
I was just curious but if you run a forum where you can't even ask a question ....think I will try elsewhere.....
I have...
emperor scorpions,14 pokies,H.gigas,stout legged baboon,stright horned baboon,OBT,king baboon,sun tiger,salmon pink,.....as well as 2 adult bci's and an 8' macklots.....so I do know something.....not a complete newb.
But again.....if I can't ask questions without getting a sarcastic reply back, from a mod of all people.......I will go elsewhere.
I am a member of about 10 different forums and this is the first time sarcasm has ever come into herp care.
Thanks for the help.

Spit the only reply i can see as sarcastic was my first reply and if your are a member of 10 differnt forums you should be able to take a few shots without going up in fire.

Your asking a question that makes it look like your thinking about getting one of these scorpions.

But if you dont like the advice you are giving here, you are more then welcome to stick to orther forums

I wasn't being sarcastic.

When it boils down to it, one is just about as dangerous as the other.

And it sure sounded like you were interested in getting the scorpions in question, reading your first post.

By the way, I see from your IP address that you're located in the UK, so I'm sure you're aware that you can't own any Buthids without a DWA license.

Or was this just for research for some other reason? Now I'm getting curious. Smile

As I've mentioned a few times on these forums, my LQ's have NEVER showed ANY signs of aggression except right after feeding and right after molting. With that said, I don't think that they are a very aggressive species. Although mine are CB, WC specimens could be different.

When comparing "fat tailed" scorpions like say androctonus with an LQ you have to be also specific with the kind of Androctonus. Some are known to be a bit less potent than others, same with the injection amount and reservoir. example: Adroctonus Australus is known to be more potent than an Androctonus Bicolor and also more aggressive.

So in my opinion, and in summary, the right(ish) answer to your question is that there are some fat tailed that are worse than LQ's and some that are not, although considering the venom values LQ's list at around the top of the most potent Fat tails.

But take into consideration that if someone asks something like this, the admins are right to dig a bit into intentions because they wouldn't want a novice keeper buying and trying to keep these then something happening and having that person try to come back on them. But with all scorpions you always should be careful and check the laws in your country.

no they aren't! that's rubbish. scorps aren't "aggressive" either, except towards food.
they are defensive...it may seem a small difference to you, but it's one of the reasons the general public stupidly fears these respect-worthy but not malicious or "evil" animals.

as for the question...
the way i'd always heard it, Aa's are more willing to sting, and sting with venom...and multiple times, whereas Lq's are "generally" more likely to give a dry sting, or a non-lethal dose. http://www.ub.ntnu.no/scorpion-files/l_quinquestriatus_info.pdf says that 97% of stings give localised effects. Aa's venom is apparently less potent, but the willingness to sting makes them a strong threat, whereas an Lq could simply choose to try to kill you, but is more likely to try to just get you to go away!
this is just relating what i've read and been told. i've seen Lq's in captivity, were great feeders but nothing scary about their behaviour.
