Selective eating? Empty
PostSubject: Selective eating?   Selective eating? Empty10/7/2009, 3:14 pm

Hey guys

Recently I've been feeding my crickets pieces of green apple since I haven't been able to go to the grocery store to
get them a more varied vegetable diet.

I noticed that my Hets weren't eating them like they used to. Usually they would eagerly kill and eat the crickets on the spot, but now they just kill them and eat a little of the cricket before leaving the rest. I've found about 3-4 partially eaten bodies so far. I've had my Hets for about a year and this is definitely irregular behavior from them.

Could it be that they have a taste preference?
Green apple gut loaded crickets vs. varied vegetable gut loaded crickets.

Thanks for reading.

Either your hets are finally fasting, or the crickets are too acidic.

At least, that's what I imagine . . . eating an acidic diet would in turn make them taste acidic to the scorps? scratch

If they were fasting they probably wouldn't bother sampling the crickets before rejecting them.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The green apples are more acidic (especially green apples) than the regular cricket diet.
I don't believe they're fasting because they are both in "feed me" position. They aren't "fat" either, but could still be the case.

The droppings of the crickets were different in color and texture as well. Didn't smell that pleasant either.
I wouldn't be surprised if their insides tasted differently too lol

Yeah, I found it odd that both of my Hets were sampling the crickets if you will.
Guess I won't really know unless I set up a control group. Just went to the grocer too, putting the crickets back on a veggie diet.

just an update:

I bought some pet store crickets and they started munching on them. Dunno if they weren't hungry before or anything like that, but I just know that they're eating crickets now. The crickets are being put on a fish flake diet as well. I might switch this up a bit every now and then to give them a more nutritious diet.

You mean you can actually keep crickets ? As much as your scorp eats I thought it may be kinda rough keeping them around. Laughing

we breed 90% of our own crickets, we feed them fish flake with a potato wedge until 4i then t-rex cricket food after that.

Seem to be fine for all the scorps, spids n lizards we have Smile

Arachnid Steve: lol it's not easy, got about 40 of them in a large kritter keeper.

Binksyboy3: haha seriously...she's being a little bossy w/ my other Het in there too

LadyRiotControl: do you know what's in the special T-rex cricket food mix? Do you think a fish flake/some veggie diet works?
