Some local friends were going to a show today and asked if I wanted anything. I shared some emp sexing pics and asked them to keep an eye out for a female for $10 or less.

They brought this $7 beauty home.

Yep, it's definitely a girl!

I estimate her to be around 5" in length:

But wait, what's that I see?

Yup, grain mites! The first time I've ever seen them in person.

I don't want to do the dry ICU tank as she's most likely gravid. I've already moved a few predatory mites over from my other tanks in the hopes that they'll control the grain mites. I can also (hopefully) bring a few predatory mites home from work, though I'm not sure how well leaf-dwelling species will fare in soil.

My hope is that I'll get a brood from her, take care of the mites, and then my three subadult males will mature . . . then I can try for another brood. Very Happy

I tried removing some mites with a Q-tip the other night -- they're stuck on pretty good, but I got a couple off. I also put some vaseline on the ones on her sternum and it looks like they've died . . . I need to remove them and try wiping off a few more.

vaseline does a good job of suffocating the mites. Doesn't take long to kill them

I've had a couple with bad infestations like that and it was sorted within a week

Nice new emp Mike XD
