Obesity in scorpions Empty
PostSubject: Obesity in scorpions   Obesity in scorpions Empty9/3/2009, 3:48 pm

I have read online that there have been no recorded cases of scorpions dying from overeating.
I.E. saying that scorpions can never eat too much.
Is this true or is it another piece of trash talk floating about the internet?

actually, it seems the myth that they can eat themselves to death is the trash, not this. Scorpions like a good meal, and will go off to digest after they've had enough, not just eat and eat til death.
this is according to Rubio's book Scorpions (Barron's publishing), a book of which i am very fond.
however, as i was just reading today in that same book, periods of feast and famine may be beneficial.
so probably worth looking into what times of year and for how long food is abundant for various species...
the cycle may be important.

If a scorpion has too much food, it won't eat. As simple as that. They'll also fast and refuse prey for no apparent reason.

If they look bloated, odds are they're either gravid or getting ready for a molt.

My parabuthus transaavilcus dont mind being obese lol. Though I dont know the danger of obese ones dropping off from high grounds as much as tarantulas.

Longest fasting i had was from a scorpio maurus palmatus. He did refuse food for a year. It was still plump from the first 8months then started to get thinner, but not malnourished. He ate exactly at the 12 month period.

Ok, cheers guys. I thought the same thing as you guys were saying in the first place but then heard that as a rumour and so just wanted to doublecheck.

Cheers

I have observed this cycle appears to be beneficial to a handful of scorpions I have at the moment. Namely my Turkish species of scorpion. After speaking to a few people in the field it is not uncommon for gravid females to eat to the point they look like they are about to explode, even eating a prey item whilst giving birth.
This ensures that the female can stay hidden with her young for longer without needing a meal

There have been several occasions where my gravid emp will have one cricket in each palp, eating them back to back. My gravid C. sculp has eaten as many as 3 good-sized crickets a day. They don't slow down or anything.
