Just want to make sure ive got the substrates right, the are old pics i have them both now on a mix of gravelly sand and fine builders sand with a little dry coco fibre in the mix aswell, is that fine?

EDIT: just had an idea, what about coco fibre thats been compacted and dried right out, i know it will hold a burrow well but im just wondering if its the right kind of substrate to use, you know cause of them being psammophilic scorps and so they live on sand.

the Scorpio maurus seems to like a mix n match of substrates, what you have already done will be fine.
Overflow the water bowl in one corner to keep the deeper substrate damp. In the wild they burrow several meters underground to reach humidity level of 70% ish. but they dont like this all the time so it pays to have a dry top (spray once a week) and a nice dampness gradient the further down they go.

If they build a tunnel and you are lucky enough to see a 'room' at the end of it, you have a happy Scorpio maurus.

Do not overfeed, once they are full they will go into their burrow and lock themselves in until they are hungry again.

As for the H. arizonensis, so long as the substrate is dry and can be be excavated it will be fine. I too gave in to temptation and bought the H arizonensis pallidus at the BTS expo. it's an awesome scorpion

congrats on the new additions Very Happy

To be honest i was expecting the H. Arizonensis to be a bit bigger but how can i complain when ive got such a gorgeous scorp, shame it doesnt come out as often as i expected, the S. Maurus on the other hand never stands still although its calmed down a bit in the last couple days, finally got bored of diggin i suppose lol. havent got it setup in its permanent home yet cause someone decided to stir the sand i had compacted in its tub so it could burrow n ruined it ¬_¬

Thing is with the substrates ive got mixed for the Arizonensis doenst seem to be holding very well and all its managed to do is make a wee scrape under hte bark i put in.

Any way i could make the substrate a lot more stable for cheap?

childs play sand / silver sand, some pea gravel and good old bentonite clay (cheapest on ebay)

ratio: 1:2:12 (clay: gravel: sand)

or the sand part could be a composite of sand and coir

burrows 100% stable

Congrats on your new additions! Your H. arizonensis will grow fairly quickly. Over the past 6 months, my sub-adults has grown quite a bit! You won't be let down. Cheers.

i thought they were really hard to raise in captivity, i always assumed that included later instars as it seems to be a moulting thing with juveniles, liek they can never really moult with any success.

EDIT: forgot to ask LadyRiotControl, are there any other good alternatives to bentonite? sack it, ill put them on play dough, that'll hold a burrow barry! Very Happy
