PostSubject: Tank set up as it is now...Progress blog..   Tank set up as it is now...Progress blog.. Empty6/14/2010, 12:59 pm

So Im back and Im setting up my first scorp tank after the disaster of mold last time I figured it was the piece of wood which was actually a mushroom well thats what Im blaming, the tank that I set up originally cracked when I left it out in the snow however I was given another one =] so here it is at the moment I have just added a mix of peat and coco fibre, the light in the tank atm is not the light I will be using it is just a pink disco bulb I have lying around lol, a few questions for you guys:
Is the light to low?
Is there enoguh substrate?
The tank is already steaming up on the inside I dont think there is enough air flow, any suggestions?
and also the light seems to be making the substrate steam a little??? Lol

buy a thermostat - this will regulate the heat from the bulb - buy a thermometer to ensure acurate reading - buy a hygrometer to keep an eye on humidity - eco bricks soack up loads of water - it will steam up untill it dry's off some - perfectly normal - when i mist my tank it soon steams up i just open the viv door slightly - or you could put a vent in the lid of your tank - plenty of substrate in there. maybe pat it down a bit it looks very loose.

Not too sure on the bulb questions as I don't use one but there is definitely enough substrate. Smile

think mine is a 60w, once its on the thermo stat it will dim down or even turn off when its warm or in winter it will come on brighter - it looks fine height wise - just dont put anything under the light that the scorp coupld climb upon and reach the bulb

I cant afford a thermostat at the moment so would you say go for the 40w bulb and leave it on all day? then turn heat mats on at night?

using malaysian driftwood is a good idea in avoiding mold

i think once he packs down the substrate it should be fine - will leave loads of room,
so long as you dont place anything under the light or close enough that it can get to it - mine is probably about that height maybe slightly higher - they sometimes sit under the light basking?!? but will soon ove if they get to warm

your tank is a good size for it, too.

Thought I would add another pic of after I put the cork bark in yesterday, I have since added a plant and hopefully if the red bulb arrives tomorrow I may get the scorpion tomorrow! Current tempertaure with both heat mats on is 72, If the bulb does not arrive tomorrow, it will arrive friday, however would the scorpion be ok for 1 day at that heat?

Picture from yesterday:

Unless you have bred them yourself or know defiitely how old they are, there is no way of telling the age of a scorpion.

You can however tell what instar it is. Yours is an adult and so could be anywhere between 2-8 years old.

It is highly unlikely that she is a year old, let alone under a year old.

Her telson is a dark red indicating that she is an adult and has been for quite some time. In captivity, it usually takes about 14 months to reach 5th instar out of 7 for females and out of 6 for males - With each molt becoming progressively further and further apart as they mature. Once they reach maturity, their telson will become a red colour with their last molt.

On a side note, don't trust what the shop keepers say. They will tell you anything to sound knowledgable to persuade you to buy from them.
If you want some stories of others to back this up as well as my own experiences, I'm sure you can find some of the threads on this forum or ask for examples etc.

Hope this helps. Smile

From the pics it looks mature to me.
Is the stinger (telson) a dark red/brown? That is a sign of maturity.
Sometimes they will last years while others die within a month, but you can't tell unless you bought it from someone such as a breeder who kept track since birth.

You should move the thermo and hygro in the middle at the top off the emclosure to ensure an accurate reading. when they are too low the hygrometer will show that there is a higher humidity then what it actually is and the temp will be a lot lower then what its supposed to be (depending on where the closest heat source is). Better to be accurate then kind-of accurate in my opinion. Its up to you though, the person that sold mine to me told me thats the best way to go.
