PostSubject: New false bottom setup (no rocks)   5/20/2009, 6:20 pm

So I've been thinking about creating this setup for my emps for a while now after I saw a similar one in a photo. I went to Home Depot and got six PVC couplings (since I didn't feel like having to cut down a long piece of PVC pipe), a piece of egg crate, and some fiberglass screen. This setup is MUCH lighter than if I were to use rocks. I like it.

They're six PVC couplings on the bottom, then the egg crate, then the screen, and finally the substrate. There's also a piece of PVC pipe in the corner fitted with screen over the top to prevent anything from going down it.

Do you think I should modify it in any way? Fill it up more? Anything?

Ummm
Create a different shape with the tubes to create a greater area where the dihydrogen monoxide could evaporate through.

DHMO = water.

Capillary action can't humidify the tank unless the liquid is contacting the substrate, so fill it up a bit more.

From everything I've read online the 2 layer seperated by a screen see the best results for wicking water up to the sub.

Theodin....I think that was his name,the guy that droped of the earth did not recommend this method at all.

Thaedion was his name.

The anti-screen recommendation was mainly to keep scorps from digging underneath your screen and getting stuck down there. In this case, with no gravel, I'd suggest keeping the screen but anchoring it securely to the frame.

You're gonna hate me for saying this, but what are false bottoms for?

I would guess for the humidity?

yeah, for keeping the substrate damp and raising humidity. saves you having to constantly dump water on the substrate.

Have you had any issues with the scorpions burrowing through the screen? what kind of screen did you use? It looks like a metal one, does/will it rust and would that be an issue for the scorps health? I found a black plastic screen to use with windows will that work or could they burrow through that easily? I also have a metal screen leftover from my last project to use if the black screen isnt a good idea.
