The pet I am most afraid of...

Of all my pets this is one I am most afraid. I have deathstalker scorpions, fattail, cobalt blue tarantula, and even scarier things. But nothing makes my skin crawl like the thought of opening this thing's tank to feed it...

The first Scolopendra sp. I had finally showed me my threshold for creepiness. The subadult I have now freaks me out when I have to feed it.

Any ideas on species for that? I got it from Arachnoporium as "Indonesian black tipped centipede". I'm guessing scolopendra subspinipes but I have no idea.

Scared to death of it. That's why I'm getting 2 mutilans in a few days lol.

I think that's another colormorph and / or subspecies of S. subspinipes.

Thanks, from the common name and coloration that's what I was guessing. It's coloring is amazing! A red head with orange legs ending in black tips. His body segments are a duller orange with a black border. I can't wait for my chinese red heads now.

hey Andrew, you will like the Red Head S. mutilans, i have one and this is my first pede i ever had purchased. I an ot too sure of how much more or less aggressive these specie are compared to any other Aisan pede, but i do know this one doesn't make make too nervous when i open the tenk to feed it.
This S. mutilans has gotten me hooked on pedes and now i want another specie

Have you ever seen a giant centipede in real life, Connie? They're . . . a wee bit on the disturbing side if you never have. I've kept them on and off for over two years (longer than I've kept scorpions!) and they still freak me out at feeding time.

i can see why they are so aggressive like a pack of wild wolves lol

Never seen a giant centipede. Even that would scare me! Its "snake like" and with "lots of legs" not my thing and doesnt push my buttons.
Even the small ones you can get in the garden make me goes "EUARRRGHHHHH" *shudder shudder*

I saw a video of a giant centipede eating a full grown mouse on YouTube and damn was it gruesome. Would never keep a centipede as a pet.

There's another video of S. gigantea climbing up a cave wall in South America and snagging a bat out of midair.

The computer I'm using right now has crap for java, so I'm not positive but I think the bat-eating-centipede video can be found here.

if my computer wasn't too darn slow for vids I would love to see that pede eating a bat

Lol, you should type 'centipede eviscerating mouse' on YouTube and check that video out. The centipede literally(well, almost) tunneled through the torso of the mouse, blood was everywhere.

I'm going to have to see this lol

2 Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans (Chinese redheads). That's temporary housing until I get to work tonight. They are not easy to photograph. I'm so excited!

Nice! These guys are cool. My little one died, sadly.

Which reminds me last night I had a huge emperor fall on the floor and take off under my bed... Part of me wanted to just leave him until morning... If a centipede got out on the other hand, you wouldn't catch me still in this house.

I would have to get Stingy is she "got out" because the cats would have her....or she would have the cats...and i cant see the babies escaping any time soon
