Do they know that it's your hand that they're crawling around on? Something living?

I doubt they know your hand is alive.. i think they think its some kind of weird warm soil they are walking on.. if you put a small emp in the palm of your hand and close your orther hand over it, making a small cave, mostly they will just realex and sit there..

I wouldn't think so.. most scorpions just get freaked out by it and try to get off.

They just know that something's not right, especially when the "ground" they're on is moving underneath them and moving them around. I would think they'd try to scurry off because they were just taken from the comfort of their tank and put on some foreign surface in the open.

Even if you're perfectly still I imagine they'd be able to sense blood pulsing around the body?

Guess its hard to know exactly what a scorpion feels, and seeing as its their main sense I guess its pretty good...

I always tell kids at outreaches that to the scorp, my hand is a funny pink piece of ground, and that's why I don't get stung.

Even if they could sense your circulation, that wouldn't mean anything to them. As awesome as scorps are, it all boils down to them just being bugs.

They just tend to freak out a bit because they're outside their usual hiding place and there's a bright light around (as has been said). That's another thing that I explain during demos; that the scorpion isn't exploring so much as it's looking for a hiding spot.

Yeah, I imagine it'd freak them out a bit though. But whenever people have asked about getting stung while handling its like, why would the scorp sting the ground it was walking on, seems unlikely. As you said they don't know they're on your arm lol

Interesting stuff, guys! Thanks! Very Happy

I've noticed that in some sp., they tend to be very aggressive and sting-happy right after feeding.

I would say that the vibration from your heart beat and movements and the brighter light would probably freak scorps out (how much probably depends on how docile they usually are). They should definitely be able to sense it given how sensitive they are to vibration. I suppose it could interpret it as approaching footsteps or something.
I also seriously doubt that scorpion brains have the processing power to recognise anything about the nature of the surface they are walking on other than its characteristics and surface texture, so it can't 'know' that your hand is alive. However, being handled without being harmed/eaten is almost certainly very rare in nature so whether or not handling will trigger a defensive behaviour is probably quite random and individual.

So, I think that it doesn't know your hand's alive but could sting/pinch it anyway because of the unusual/unnatural conditions that handling entails Smile

Yeah, I didn't mean they'd be able to tell you were human or a living organism of any kind, but they'd be freaked by it lol
