Whats a good begginer T Empty
PostSubject: Whats a good begginer T   Whats a good begginer T Empty4/28/2009, 7:24 am

Starting to find T's facinating and after my local pet shop got in a load of nice sized healthy looking specimins I was wondering what is a good T to start with and what size is best as i know they grow really slowly(?).

Also it would be good if it wasnt one which burrows and hides away most of the time.

Chiles? Red knees? I really havent a clue?

grammastola and brachypelma species are pretty good and forgiving species, as is the chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (green bottle blue) the latter just lays down webbing for the fun of it! These are also terrestrial tarantula's so you will see them most of the time

adult females are usually a good place to start, however if you want longer out of your tarantula think about getting a juvi. this way you will learn it's temperament very early on and 'grow' with it. This way if you end up with a male, you haven't spent all the money on a sub adult that may not last 12 months!

I wouldn't suggest buying a sling as yet until you have more experience. Although this may be fine, a lot of newbs accidentally over water them when they are sooo little.
Once you are used to a juvi, you can better gauge the water needs of a sling and become better at noticing when not to feed because they are about to shed. they can get seriously fat before they pop as slings! We can usually guage within a week or so when slings are going to shed, but that comes with practice Smile

why not get a rarer Grammostola species instead of a rosea? they are very forgiving as lisa said and they reach a decentish size.

i have an adult female rosea. the most lovely invert i have ever owned. calm as anything and wont burrow or stay in a hide. constantly out and about.
i am useless with slings and recently lost 6 for unknown reasons. still got 4 smithi and 1 emilia slings but they wont be adult for decades.
suggestions:
GBB
rosea or other grammostola species.

You won't regret getting a B. albopilosum (Curly hair). That's what I started with Very Happy

In my opinion a Gramastola rosea or if you want a bit more of a challenge an Avicularia urtican or a Avicularia versicolor

I don't know why so many people suggest green bottle blues as beginners. The things are pet holes! Even more so than most beginner scorpions. Rolling Eyes

Thats why I like the Antilles pinktoe it's gorgeous and arboreal so you you see it most of the time. The only downfall is they are very fast and they jump.......ok and they squirt poop at you lol. The rosea is fairly slow and docile and larger then the pinktoe. I love all mine but my rosy the most.

Mine was never a pet hole. He built web columns. I was always fun to watch the little guy chase the cricket through the web columns in the container. I wish I took a video of it Sad

Didn't really plan to get this one but got a Grammostola rosea today he's only about a cm big thought i'd get something bigger but the shop had about 30 or them and thier conditions are not great so i thought i'd save one.

You may say saving one out of 30 won't make a difference, but it made a difference to the little fella Smile
