Heterometrus ...?

Hi all,
I just got a new pet scorpion a few weeks ago and I'm trying to id it. The guy at the shop said that it's an emperor scorpion but I've had a look around and it seems that in reality it's a Heterometrus spp, maybe H. spinifer? Not that I'm disappointed or anything . I'd also love to know the sex, I suspect that it's a male but as I'm a complete newbie I'd love to have some sexing help.
At the bottom of the post I've put a link to some photos of the scorpion and the underside that I've put up in Facebook, so any info on what I've got would be great!

well certainly aint an emp, but no idea wat heterometrus species it is, im no good at iding hets
and it looks pretty darn male to me

im not sure on that one... it has much larger claws than any spinifer or longimanus i have ever seen, they look emp sized but it isnt an emp... its male btw... could it be a spinifer X emp hybrid? its very unlikely as i dont think they can interbreed. wrong shape claws to be a swammerdami...
i dont know...

Agreeing with Connie on H. laoticus -- smooth carapace. Also agreed on male.

Jordan, what makes you think it's large? There's no size reference . . .

the size of the claws in comparison with the rest of the body. i never said the scorp was big!

Ahh, I thought you meant in general, not relative to the rest of the body.

The size makes me agree with H. laoticus; they're not terribly large. See mine below:

BTW Thanks for the ID everyone and the sex. I'm really enjoying my first H. laoticus, hopefully I might get another (pref. a female) and try to breed them in the future. Once I convince the hubby that getting another scorpion is a great idea that is! He shouldn't be too surprised though, knowing my interest in more unusual pets (toads, mantids, scorpions) and the fact that he is allergic to both fur and feathers...

I've got myself a petersii and the granulations are not the same, so that be a laoticus you've got there ^^

My H.spin was really aggressive when I first got him I can handle him now when I have too.
You shouldn't though it stressess them out.

For future reference when you buy a scorp from a pet store take what they say with a grain of salt lol.
