PostSubject: maggots!!!   maggots!!! Empty4/29/2009, 4:57 am

I was cleaning some cricket leftovers from my 2i p.imp sling and i found 2 small (very small) white maggots under the half eaten cricket.
Should i move the scorp to another container with new substrate?Should i worry about parasites in the crickets?
Please tell me what should i do!!Thanks in advance

I'd be inclined to do a full substrate change. and in the future take out any uneaten food pieces to stop it from rotting.

The cricket was put in there last night,so it was not there much time.I will change the substrate, but is there a possibility of endo-parasites?If it was in the cricket can it be transferred in the scorpion?

Don't worry too much, especially if your scorp is a forest dweller. I'm sure maggots and scorps have been coexisting on the planet since, well before any of us were around.

Are you absolutely positive they are maggots? Are they tiny or fairly large? Are you sure they are not cricket larvae?

i doubt they were maggots. Some wild caught feeders have parasites. If the crickets were bought they are less likely to have them. I would just clean and boil the substrate just to be on the safe side. Although i just had strange de ja vu and remember a time I had a similar problem. It was summer and we had a bad ant and fly pest problem in our house.

You can boil substrate? Would it not be easier to buy more?

Why does everyone insist on boiling and never baking? Boiling is a lot messier and can't get nearly as hot.

And crickets don't have larvae, they have nymphs (miniature adults that hop everywhere).

Can you microwave the coco peat stuff? It shouldn't burn as long as it's saturated and I'm sure that would kill most things in it,.. Haven't needed to try it yet though so pirat.

Remove the dirt containing maggots, close the lid and be happy.. end of story.. maggots eat death flesh.. so unless your scorp is dead you dont have to worry..

While most people are on the panicky side here, I'll add that microwaves have "hot spots" and "cool spots," so they're pretty awful at sterilization.
