I prefer hets -- P. cavimanus will rip your face off.

Ok thanks. I was tempted to go for p. cavimanus but apparently hets are very aggressive and they dont hesitate to sting and it hurts alot. Is this true?

( so far, you're persuading me to go for a het lol)

I will want to handle it. The more you handle a scorp or an animal, the more docile it'll become. Thats why i was staying away from the het, so any info would be great.

Not true with Scorpions, if a particular scorpion is calm natured it will usually stay that way, if it is feisty it will also stay the same. Scorpions cant be tamed by frequent handling, actually too much stresses them out and this can cut down thier lifespan

only sometimes though, thats why you bring up animals to be good or bad. For example, a pitbull, many people have them and some of them are brought up to be kind and they end up that way.

Harsh but true... scorpions get absolutely nothing from human contact. Whereas dog and hamsters enjoy and thrive on it. Thats why most scorpion keepers refer to them as thier collection as oppossed to thier pets.

Not to say that occassionally some of us dont hold some of our scorpions (including myself a few times) but some never do and have been keeping them for years.

their brains are just a jumble of nerves and all they are programmed to do is eat, defend themselves, breed and survive, and you picking them up puts them in danger and they will just try to defend themselves and not get used to it like mammals or birds. even fish have more developed brains, and know where food comes from (ie. when you open the lid to their tank they go up for food) but a scorpion will never learn.

also, why do people handle their scorps?
because they like to handle their animals and they enjoy it, gives them a thrill.
The thrill that cannot be attained through a hamster.

At the end of the day they are pets. You house them, feed them, clean up after them.

Yeah, i understand i'm taking that risk, all i was asking was what was more aggressive and a nicer attribute p.cavimanus or het.longimanus/spinifer?

So far the first 4 answers actually helped.

Bang Head sorry im being harsh!
i wouldnt go with a cavimanus because they just like to kill, even friendly ones.
a het spinifer is probably a good choice and a longimanus is probably a good choice too but ive never had one. do you want more than one? if so that completely rules out cavimanus.

As has been stated ad nauseum, there's absolutely no need to handle your scorpions, it gives them no benefit, and their ganglia are only programmed for their basic needs in nature.

Excessive handling will only be detrimental to the animal. Even my normally calm H. longimanus freaks out if she's held for more than a few minutes (see below).

Just because aggressiveness or calmness varies between specimens doesn't mean they have personalities.

I used to get excited by handling, but now I only handle for demonstrations to show the public that scorpions don't deserve the bad rep they get.

After this, if you still disregard all of our advice, don't get either of those species. In fact, I can't think of any scorpion that would respond well to handling. Even U. mordax flips out after a couple minutes and may dart off your hand and fall to its demise.

As for the aggression you asked about in Hets, I've never known one to be "sting-crazy." My experience with that genus and P. cavimanus was only warning tail-flicks. I have heard, however, that being stung by H. longimanus hurts like hell for about half an hour.

here here, the only time I handle mine is a) when necessary e.g. rehousing or b) to demonstrate they are not evil nasty stingy things that Hollywood glamorises upon.

I admit when I was younger and first came into the hobby I used to hold my scorpions a lot, but after the 'honeymoon period' I soon realised they are better left to their own devices.

In this thread you have been given a lot of sound information about caring for your scorpions, and had a few myths put right. The decision is, of course, yours to make but I also strongly suggest you handle your collection as little as possible, and new additions should never be procured for the handling factor.

I understand that it is tempting to handle your scorpions, when I got my first I handled it a few times, but to be honest the novelty wears off and it has to "thrill" to it anymore. I don't do it anymore, haven't done so for ages, don't plan to again. plus, the scorpion usually isn't to happy about it.
