Anguis fragilis

Anguis fragilis (slowworms) are always in my garden. these rare legless lizards are protected in the UK. Just thought you guys might find it interesting.

we get adders up in here, but the only live in certain areas, I'd love to find some at somepoint.

I found two today and decided to keep one for the first time. I have given them a decent home with food. Apparently they can live up to 50 years and can grow to a metre long.

yeah ive seen grass snakes, adders, common lizards and sand lizards round these parts

slow worms are awesome. When I lived near Portsmouth near the Navy base there was lots of land in which to find them. I remember catching one once and had it on my lap, then wiggled like mad and jizzed all over me!

however breeding these to sell can be a bit of a pain with the legal system. (bit of info should you ever decide to do this)

Basically if you get 2 males and 2 females and you breed them, then you breed their offspring together, then the subsequent offspring are then classed as captive bred and therefore you can sell them. But you have to keep the original adults and keep a record of them in order to prove this!

Just some random information I learned not so long ago that I thought I would share with you all lol!

i have a slowworm now and i am planning to set up a tank to rescue them. they are abundant around here and our 4 cats love to catch them and bring them in. they dont kill them but they normally drop their tails and have wounds around their head, so i keep them for a while and then release them in a wood near here. recently new neighbours have moved in and their approach to gardening is to masacre every living plant in sight with weedkiller, and plant swings and trampolines. this puts the slow worms, that live in the long grass and shrubs in their garden, in danger. so i will be keeping any that my cats bring in and try to breed them and release the babies into a safe place away from the cats in my garden or in a massive pile of grass and branches near our house where everyone dumps their garden stuff. i will also try to rescue any slowworms i can from their garden.
im not sure about them being rare, i have no trouble finding them around here!

No, globally they are rare.
But nice work, they're lovely creatures

wish it was warmer up here, I aint seen one in years since i moved back up north
