| iam betting that the Rhopalurus might be keept like junceus http://venomlist.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18462&pid=204983&st=0&#entry204983 But you might have some trouble finding these since they are illegal in the UK, unless you have a permit for them | |

| I've kept o.boehmi and whalberghi but i would pretty much guess these would be the same. you basically want a sand / coir substrate mix. damp but not wet, reasonably toasty temperature similar to heterometrus temps. nice piece of bog wood or cork for it to hide under. It will either dig out a scrape under the 'hide' or it will do full blown burrow. I think thats right if memory serves me but i will have a looksies elsewhere to double check And are you getting a DWA? for the ralph's? | |

| Thanks Lisa and Kejser for the info as for the Rhopalurus the seller says (quote) Caution should be taken, a few other species within the Rhopalurus family are listed as DWA, this Club Tailed Scorpion is not listed as a DWA species.
So I will be carefull with them but doesnt seem i need a DWA!
Sweet! | |

| they are talking a load of bull's poo and in my book, the seller needs reporting to defra
just checked the DWA list and ALL ralphs are DWA - no exceptions
the last amendment to the act was in 2007 which included the recently discussed Hemiscorpius lepturus in the scorpion section.
although some of the buthids are no where near as venomous as their other buthid cousins, nontheless they are all licensed species.
DWA Act 1976, 2007
unless anyone can provide me with an official government link to a later amendment I believe the 2007 amendment is the latest edition.
in case you haven't guessed I am sort of seeing red about this, I cannot believe they are saying they are not DWA!

| that's a rock and a hard place question my friend.
no doubt i would love them in my collection! it's more of the fact that they are selling these as non DWA that has got my back up. god knows what else they would sell saying they are DWA exempt, they are being a danger to themselves and to the public

| it's a shame.. I (and I'm sure all of us) would love to have this species, but if we had it and were discovered, it could put a bad name to scorp - keepers. for instance, I'd be willing to bet if it somehow got to te news these scorpions would be described as "large, deadly insects" . but.. I say go get 'em. | |

| yeah but buying them on line is incredibly dodgy. presuming that they are still illegal, and the shop was caught, the authorities could get the contact details of everyone who had bought them from internet records and basically go around and confiscate them. And leave the buyer liable for prosecution.
although with them saying they are non DWA the purchaser would probably get away with a slapped wrist.

| ok just got a reply from a friend on another forum, who is basically a bible on these issues, and he confirmed that the 2007 amendment to the DWA Act 1976 is the current publication and therefore ALL buthids are required to have a DWA license
This site is selling illegally.

| just to confirm I have rung DEFRA this morning,
the link to the Act that i posted is the CURRENT Act. buyer beware if purchasing these scorpions. especially off the internet if they are reported they will be bale to track who got these scorpions from internet records.

| My two cents, if anyone's interested.
Get 'em, and just keep your mouth shut. Your hobby shouldn't have to suffer because of a law that started with good intentions but has since gotten out of hand.
I've kept illegal arthropods in the past that I purchased online. Yes, the government found out because I posted about it online, but due to fortunate circumstances, they never searched my home and everything was cleared up.
So Kuma, if you're careful who you talk to, nothing should hold you back. Lisa, granted it's dumb for the shop to be selling things that it technically shouldn't, but we all know he's a responsible hobbyist and won't do anything stupid with them. (As an aside, there's a local pet shop I know of who sells phasmids -- something illegal here but everyone seems to have them in the UK.)

| oh I agree mike. the politics in this country is definitely up the spout.
If the shop in question was nearer and I could purchase over the counter by cash, no doubt I would be tempted to buy them, however traceable records in this matter kinda put me off. Plus they are seriously overpriced. they know exactly what they have on their hands and trying to make some decent cash while the going is good.
I'm not saying to people 'dont' buy them. I'm just saying be very careful. I do not doubt for a second that Leon is more than capable of keeping these as with many other members of the forum. I'm more worried about him or anyone else getting into trouble if the shop get investigated in the matter.
actions and consequences, and all that jazz.
