Are there any down there? If so, what species and where do you look (under what?)? My girl is down there and I'm gonna see if I can get some shipped to me. She's like me and never been on a hunt. A small collecting tutorial would be nice, too.

Thanks Smile

I assume you mean Florida?

Most likely is Centruroides gracilis and C. hentzi. A sting from the first is pretty nasty, the second not so bad.

Hmm . . . go out at night, blacklight everything, lift up rocks and pieces of bark or human trash and see what's underneath. Long tweezers with rubber tips make collecting a breeze if you've got a nice selection of delis or vials at your disposal. (If it's a mild species I'll just tail 'em by hand, but it's hard to ID under a blacklight.) I remember from my collecting trips in Texas seeing a lot of scorps just wandering around by the sides of dirt roads.

Yup. Florida is correct, Mike.

I know nothing about scorpion hunting - I'll be honest. So ... Can you catch them during the day as well?

You can find 'em during the day if you're lucky, but a blacklight won't do you any good and they won't be out and about.

At night they're more likely to be wandering around outside of a hide and they're MUCH easier to spot blacklighting.
