I pretty much get the pictures with my phone camera and a flashlight in the dark.

Cool scorp, but I'd suggest replacing the substrate with something more burrow-friendly (such as coco fiber) and making it a few inches deeper.

Thanks....will do.

How do you keep the potting soil from drying out?

I have these "plastic caves" in my terrarium that they stay in, but they do seem to pile up dirt. How much potting soil or coconut fiber should I add?

The deeper the better IMO. I have 6 inches at the deepest part of my tank

TO keep the coca fiber from dryin out you can make up a false bottom tank with a layer of rocks on bottom fine screen over the rocks pvc tube in a corner to pour water into rocks and coca fiber ontop of rocks and screen.False bottom tanks are the best method to keep your coca fiber from dryin out and the humidity up.

You can also dump water right onto the coca fiber but you will have to do it far less with a false bottom.

Six inches is a bit much, but go for it if you feel like it. I don't think I've ever had more than four.

While false-bottoms keep substrate humidified longer, they can make tanks quite heavy. Just a heads-up. (Still lighter than if it were an aquarium, though.)

I certainly recommend false bottom tanks since I did mine earlier this year. I have water bowls in there but the scorpions have never used them because the humidity is spot on. Dont plan to take them out just in case, but it just shows you the difference it makes.
I top the water level up every 3-4 weeks.

But yes... definitely weighty, make sure they are on a secure surface

Excellent info....thanks.

I had plants in my terrarium but I noticed that the crickets spent all of their time in them and I felt that this made it harder for the scorpions to catch them....so I took them out.

I want it a natural as possible so this "false bottom" sounds interesting. I'm not too concerned with humidity as I live in west central Florida and I now pretty much keep my windows open all the time. Does the false bottom tank generate any mold or mildew odors? (My scoprion's and their tank generates no odors and I love that.)

Tell me about a heater for the bottom of my tank. It rarely gets below 72 in my apartment and when it hits 68 degrees the furnace kicks on....is this sufficient for them?

Thanks again for all the info.

I've been "getting by" with my pets for a while now. But now I want to do them right...they deserve it.

Thanks again.

There is a cool product on the market called hydoball which keeps the weight down quite a bit as opposed to using gravel in the false bottom. They are basically clay marbles that filter the water nicely. I'll put up pics of the making of my tank soon.

I got around six inches for my P.Cav he built the sweetest burrow in it (even though I had to destroy it cause of crickets). Someone on this forum told me to spray your tank often and put plastic wrap over 3/4 of the top to keep in humidity and my humidity stays between 75 and 85 so that works too.

Why did you have to destroy it because of crickets? I keep 5 or 6 crickets in my terrarium weekly. Is this a bad thing?

because his scorpion was moulting/about to moult and crickets are known to feed on newly - moulted scorpions because they are nice and soft. when you stick crickets in, only keep them in for a day or so. and don't put more in than your scorp can eat in that time.

^^ He's right thats why I did it. I didn't mean to put so many in I thought he was eating them but then one night I heard them chirping so i knew they were still in there. If you go to pet stores they always have like 6 crickets in there all the time and a lot of places leave the dead crickets in there. Take live crickets out if they arent eaten in 24 hours. Take dead crickets and legs out asap.

If you're worried about odours you could mix some activated charcoal with the gravel, it will act as a catalyst to break down bacterial byproducts (ie. the smells, toxins etc) so you shouldn't have any trouble. Aquarists use activated charcoal in filters for the same thing (to keep the water fresher/cleaner) so you should be able to get some in any shop that sells aquarium equipment or accessories Smile
