B. Jacksoni 5i

My b. jacksoni just molted to 5th instar today

This was the first to molt to 4i on 2-14-09 so it took just over a month. The warmer temps are working to speed up their maturation I do believe.

Nice! The pinchers appear narrow from that pic; I'm guessing you've got a female.

I'm hoping so..."she" had just molted and the tips of the pinchers were still white. I sat the exoskeleton on the rock...snapped a quick pic and put her back to bed. I'm going to look at your pics again to be sure...I will let you know for sure soon! Time to get the enclosure ready.

I do believe this is a female as the pinchers are not bulbous like other pics I've seen (Mike has some great scorpion pics on his site). Females molt to 6i, but males only to 5i. I will wait til some of the others molt to 5i and I have one to compare. This is all so exciting!

This is what the set up looks like

I have a cheap heating pad from Wal Mart in the bottom of the drawer. The only problem is that it runs for an hour then shuts off, so I'm always having to click it back on. The temps in the drawer run from 85F to 90F...which is only 5 degrees warmer than what is recommended for this species. There is about a half inch of coco fiber in the bottom which I keep dry on one side and moist on the other. With the heat and moisture there is visible condensation on the lid and sides of the containers. I have vent holes in the lid and on the upper sides of the walls. Be really careful making the holes. I lost 3 of my babies the first weekend because they wggled out of the vent holes. Make the holes very very small.The others are not looking as plump so I'm guessing the one that just molted to 5i in a month may be a freak. They probably won't be too far behind, but none of the others look like they are ready to burst.
