PostSubject: Atacama Red Scorpion - Caraboctonus Keyserlingi   2/15/2009, 12:06 pm

I have just purchased an Atacama Red Scorpion, Im kinda new to this thing. I have bee brought up all my life with snakes and I have kept black emperors for a few years now too. I was just wondering if there is any advise anyone can give me.

Im looking to find out the followong -

Living Habits - eg, lighting, Heating, whats needed?

Feeding? How often?

Venom,? Whats their sting like and how serious is it?

Any other advise that you feel I should know would be apreciated, as I say, so far I have bees sucessfull with varietys of snakes and black emporors and want to be sucessful with this lil one.

Cheers.

No heat mat needed.
I used a 50/50 sand and coco fibre mix. They like to burrow under things, so a few Slate peices will be enjoyed by them.
I spray one end of the tank maybe once a week...once every 2 weeks.

I had three. One died and in the tank I can only find one! I need to do a search but I think it got eaten...
So I would say for safety only keep one.

Very doscile scorpion. Their telson looks huge but when faced with anything they basically curl up and hide!

and no scorpion needs lighting.

I also have two of these, they seem ok together in a tank large enough with about 5 inches or so substrate to burrow in.

They don't share hides so as Connie said a few bits of slate in the tank will allow them to make thier own burrows

My three didnt share burrows. nice deep cocofibre and sand substrate.
One died.
Had two remaining...but one has vanished. Only one is alive under the shallow water bowl. oh well Smile

But they do like slate to hide under Smile

With the exception of a couple species in one genus, if it's not a buthid it's not dangerous. And these guys aren't buthids.

If it doesn't want food, don't worry. Scorpions can fast for a long time, and some won't eat when they're in a new environment. Let it settle in for a few days (that could also explain the wandering).

did you mean what the sting is like? the most annoying sting ever. not painful, just irritating.

it stings for about 20mins, gradually getting less and less

but....

after my fingertip had finished stinging, every time i put pressure on my finger it would sting again for about 3-5 mins. go away again until i put pressure on and it would happen again

ANNOYING!!!!

for about 2 hours this went on for as well!
