My New Setup Empty
PostSubject: My New Setup   My New Setup Empty2/7/2009, 8:38 pm

Well, since my last post, I recently upgraded my terrarium. I added a see-through burrow, and filled the rest of the tank with substrate. I have two heat mats - 1 10 gal tank size and a 5 gal tank size. My humidity and temp levels are great. My scorps both seem to love their new home. It's been over a few weeks and I haven't noticed any problems with them taking to their new environment. I've also noticed that when I feed them crickets, they are more aggressive when the prey enter their burrow. I figure because they might be more protective of their "home" so-to-speak. Anyhow, I'm hoping to get some feedback, good/bad and am open to suggestions on how to improve my tank. I'm relatively new to this hobby and am always willing to do more. Thanks

That looks really cool...I've never seen the burrows used before. One thing that might help is to make a cover for the exposed part of the burrow up front. Maybe velcro a dark piece of cloth or cardboard that use could put on when not viewing. Might help make them feel secure when they are in the burrow. Just a thought, but your set-up looks sweet...bet its fun to watch them in there.

humidity needs to be higher, and a substrate like coco fibre, potting soil, etc should be used instead of woodchips. low humidity could cause problems when that little juvi does to moult.

ok.
sand NO and woodchips NO
Get them out of that situation. Buy some coco fibre/plantation soil. In a bucket of water and let that soak up the water and have that instead of the sand and woodchips.

Pandinus imperator are TROPICAL scorpions who would not be found on sand.

I know you say your temps and humidity are fine but I dont see how your humidity is fine since they are in a dry enviroment.

Or have I got it wrong and this burrow is FAKE SAND. if so use it but put in plantation soil to make it more natural to them

one looks gravid and the other looks like a 4i... a gravid female will kill an adult male/female if she feels like it, so that lil' one wouldnt stand a chance.

What Connie said.

Emps are NOT meant for sand. For one thing, sand doesn't hold humidity unless it's sopping wet, and it is clearly NOT sopping wet in your enclosure. And when sand is that wet, it wouldn't support burrowing (something these scorps do naturally).

Jordan also had a point -- if your adult is a gravid female, she might munch her tankmate, seeing it as a threat to her brood.

The see-thru burrow may be handy for an H. arizonensis or something, but it may be better just to let them work out that naturally burrowing instinct on their own.

Sorry if I came off harsh, but it's all in the interest of the scorps' health.

thank you mike. no one else seemed to notice what we have.
get them off that sand and into a cocofibre substrate. I also agree about the burrow. they like to hide, that is the idea

Any news, OP? I'd like to see if your emps have made it to a suitable environment.
