I'm curious about the nutritional needs of scorpions (in general). Be it nutrients used in the development of the carapace (which I heard was partially phosphorus, please correct me if I'm wrong), or nutrients used for growth. Anyone have a good amount of information on this?

I've never really given nutrition a thought. I just give mine crickets with the occasional roach. I'd imagine they can get everything they need to grow a new exo with what they get out of the exo's of the feeders. Though I haven't even heard of problems with T's that are fed strictly verts in their diet. I'd venture to say in terms of nutritional needs, inverts are very basic.

As noobish as this probably sounds, I was thinking of experimenting with nutritional supplements and scorps. The size and build of the scorpion being the dependent variable of course.

There hasnt been any proof of scorps needing any nutritional needs..

Everything has nutritional needs.

The most basic need is food calories for an energy supply.

There also has to be a certain level of protein in an animal's diet, otherwise it won't have the raw materials necessary to produce its own proteins. In other words, you couldn't raise a scorp purely on carbs and fat.

"Size and build" is too vague a dependent variable, and there's too many variables that depend on nutrition to make this an easy experiment. There's overall health (which alone is hard to define), longevity, activity levels, rate of growth, reproductive ability, etc, etc.

in gutload my crickets and other livestock because i have a lot of lizards to feed Smile as well as the 50 odd inverts

but i dont dust them with suppliments for the inverts. i used to when i first started out many years ago but nothing changed with the scorpions when i stopped dusting the livestock.

but obviously important to keep your livestock healthy. i spend as much time tending to our livestock as i do the inverts - we breed all our own stock

In the wee scorp book i have the guy says that almost nothing is known about the nutritional requirements of scorps just make syure the feeders are well fed n healthy, i feed my crickets on fish food flakes (if you read the label its bloody well packed with the good stuff Very Happy ) and some carrot or mixed salad for water n a bit more vitamins.

I looked into this some wehn seeing what is best ways to gutload crix or roaches. What I found was that there is no need to dust feeder bugs if you have them gutloaded. Protein is the biggie...I use dog biscuits for puppies...has higher protein than adult dog biscuits...and no artificial color. Just make sure the protein info is in the 20s. Then supplement with fresh fruits and veggies. I'm sure fish food is good too...I just like the dog biscuit cuase it is easy to see and less messy. Dusting with calcium powder is only needed for reptile feeders...scorpions don't benefit and get all they need for exoskeleton from the insects' exoskeleton...the article said calcium powder is just important for verts. Would support wheat Lisa said. I even found cricket water that does not have added calcium...it says it is for scorpions on the label even...so that was good news. Some people say cat food is too high in protein and can cause females in the breeder colonies to abort. Probably only an issue if you have a feeder colony. Like everything...gutload with a mix and your scorpions will benefit. Probably no need to make up those crazy gutload recipes on thee internet. Save your money for scorpions instead of gutload!

Agreed, cricket water gell is ridiculously expensive. What I found appears to be the same thing, and is quite cheap. It's called Watersorb. I've seen it recommended a few times.

As for carapace development, they are composed of phosphorus right?

The carapace is part of the exoskeleton, which I think is composed mainly of tough fibrous protein. There may be some other chemicals in there as well. I don't recall reading anything about phosphorus being a special part of exoskeletons.

I'm just trying to figure out what nutrients are used in the construction of various organs, the exoskeleton, etc...

Proteins in food --> broken down into amino acids --> oxidized for energy OR reconstituted into proteins making up the various bodily organs.

Fat is typically processed only for energy. Carbohydrates can go towards some structural components, but if they're lacking in the diet, I *think* you could synthesize them from fats.

(Note: in humans, carbohydrates are an essential energy source for the brain; without it, human bodies will find other temporary sources of energy but carbohydrate starvation will eventually cause death -- I don't know if this is true with the nervous system in arthropods.)
