...
do a bit of research... there are tonnes of threads like this. yes, the emp is the best starter but if you want a lighter colored one go for a desert hairy...
we have a section dedicated to the emperor scorpion and there are lots of threads about desert hairys.
dont keep an emp on sand. their tropical so need high humidity
do keep a desert hairy on sand. they are desert species. they need very low humidity or they can get a fungal infection called mycosis from the humidity. both of these species have mild venom. the emps are very calm and the one to get if you really have to hold one... but bear in mind that the scorpion will not like being handled and you wont like being stung.
dont even bother trying to handle the desert hairy. there a lot more aggro than emps.
an emp is what is refered to in the hobby as a "pet hole" because they make deep burrows and barely ever come out. desert hairys on the other hand, are out most of the time and make much better display animals.
both species need heat from a heat mat, placed on the side or back of the cage NOT underneath as they burrow to avoid heat and will cook themselves if they burrow onto the heat mat. a bulb can be added but it will be mostly just for viewing and not a heat source. scorpions are nocturnal and cannot see red light. so get yourself a lamp and a red bulb, switch it on at night, and watch them without messing up there day/night cycle.
hope this helps, if you need any more info just ask or search the forums caresheets.

Yep...what scorpio said Razz

I had both an Emperor(black one) and a Desert Hairy(yellow one) when I first got into scorpions. The desert hairys are a truly awesome scorpion. Before you get anything do a lot of research here and online. There are so many different species now. I got online a couple months ago to get another desert hairy after no scorpions for 3 years. After reading a lot and comparing I ended up getting a bunch of 1 inch baby scorpions to raise up. Definitely a long ways from my first intention of getting another hairy!

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions here. The people here are so nice and helpful. You will go around and around on what to get. Just learn as much about the ones that interest you. I would definitely resist any urge to get a highly venomous species to start with. Wait til you have some idea of what you are doing before you get something that could really hurt you or someone else. Good Luck.

A good substrate is coco fiber (Eco Earth), which can be used by itself or mixed with sand. This is a must if you have scorpions with humidity needs. Desert hairys can do fine on just sand. Cleaning can depend, but honestly that is one of the nice things about the hobby...the cage needs very little cleaning if any. Just remove leftover bug pieces so they don't mold or cause mites. Providing some water...in a dish or misting...depends on the type, but thats about it. Its like taking care of a plant, with 10 times the reward!
