My Emps are fighting! Empty
PostSubject: My Emps are fighting!   My Emps are fighting! Empty1/21/2009, 10:53 pm

I had an adult Emp for about two months now, and I love him. I love him so much, that I got me another Emp. Only this time, a much smaller one, about 3 inches in length. They're both males, and after being introduced, they are fighting and not leaving each other alone. They have plenty of burrows for the both of them, but they choose to follow one another around. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Depending on the severity of the fighting i wouldn't be worried too much. How many hides other than just burrows do you have-surfacewise? Have they eaten recently? Is their space great enough for either one to roam and find seclusion if they desired? Was one in the enclosure long before the other? If so try and remove and mix the surrounding up a bit- its possible that they are fighting over already claimed territory. Check out my video and let me know if its as rough as this haha

Check out one of my threads-perhaps it may help.

If there's a large size discrepancy, I wouldn't keep them together.

if you can greatly see a HUGE size difference then dont have them together.
Did you change the tank and move it all around before putting in the new one?

Well, it's nothing like the video you have posted, ha ha. It's more of they won't leave each other alone. My biggest has been in the tank the longest. I have them in a 10 Gal. tank, each have their own burrow, a hide, and a log to climb. Other replies said that if there's a huge difference in size, then I shouldn't keep them together. They don't seem to be fighting anymore, but more of following each other around. Should I re-arrange things, separate, or just wing it and see what happens? Suggestions are GREATLY appreciated becuase this is a whole new pet experience for me. Thanks. Here's a pic of them. The first one is not that clear, but it was taken a few minutes ago when I removed the log from on top of them. The second one is, well, the second pic. ;-) They've been like this ALL DAY!!

Id be mad if some little punk jumped on my back too. LOL. Its pretty interesting that the large one allows it. I think theyre used to each other- at least a little bit. If theyre not fighting per se, then i would assume the worst is behind you...perhaps the little guy sticks with the big guy for safety? Anyone able to confirm such behavior? I have six in my tank (My tank is much much larger than yours though) as of now, and the two little ones stay with my gigantic one, while the mid-sized ones have their own place. Ive also seen the larger ones killing prey and feeding it to the little ones while only taking a nibble for themselves. I would just watch carefully. Following one another around is telling me that there is a tolerance between them. Thats good. What is your substrate and its depth? just curious. Thats so hilarious how the little one is riding the big one.

Odds are your biggest is just arguing over the previously claimed real estate and is now learning to live with the new one. Like i said before-and youve seen, mine fought rather bitterly at first, but now it appears that those two that were so violent are together in the same burrow like pals. Its strange, i know. Read up on some of the behaviors of this creature. ive been through a ton of threads about them, and it appears they just act strangely once in a while. I really need to sleep, im barely coherent. ha ha. best of luck and keep us posted on the activities. cheers!

Emps tend to pile up when they're used to each other, so it looks like you're over the rough spot.

If you see more aggression, try stirring up the whole tank's substrate and rearrange the hides.

If that doesn't work, separate them.

You can try baking the substrate and the hides (if they're not plastic). Also, you should probably clean out the enclosure pretty well if you do that.

Good luck!

Well, I apologize that it's been so long since I replied and gave an update on the situation. It seems that my two emps have been getting along just fine. A little too well sometimes it may seem. It's almost as if they became friends - they're always together, the little one hiding under the big one if it gets startled. It's quite humorous actually. Not what I had in mind when I pictured it. Has anyone ever seen this type of behavior before? It's really quite fascinating. I've been doing research about scorpions and nothing that I've came across ever really described they're social activity. I guess it just varies. If there's anyone else that has seen anything like this, please share. But other than that, I haven't had a problem with these two since first being introduced. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Just as I figured. Emps are very social and if you look hard enough you can find that in the wild they have been know to live in "families"

That's great to hear! Mine started out just like yours, now, they're inseparable. My largest polices any quarrels and even brings food into their burrow to feed the others (one cricket in each pedipalp and one in its chelicerae). Its pretty interesting. My smallest rides any other P. Imp it can, even laying UNDERNEATH them for protection, between their legs, all balled up. Its funny because the most vicious one is the little guy. HAHA. I absolutely love these creatures. They're fun to watch (when they're out and about), and display interesting social habits. I'd have a scorp over a dog any day ha ha.
