mold in my emp enclosure!? Empty
PostSubject: mold in my emp enclosure!?   mold in my emp enclosure!? Empty12/27/2008, 10:55 pm

i just looked in on my emp and found that there seems to be mold growing in the coco fiber substrate!!! Bang Head the whole top layer seems to have a lite mold on it. though it is only visible in dim lighting. if i shine a bright light directly on it i cant see it! there are a few spot with fairly heavy mold on it. the problem is, i dont have any coco fiber here to change it and it too late to go out and buy it. would removing the top layer of sub be good, as a temporary solution, until i can get some more?

Stir it, make it less humid.

Sometimes mold multiples overnight.

I had this big ball of mold appear overnight.

well i think it was from poor ventilation. i have 2/3 of the top covered with plastic and had set a piece of paper on the top, accidentally covering the remaining 1/3... oopps! Bang Head would i be alright just removing the top layer? or should i change it all when i can get more?

Don't bother removing everything. Spot-clean the bad bits and don't worry about it.

Venom's suggestion of stirring it all in will just make it grow mold from everywhere, instead of just the top layer.

Yup.

Just remove the spots and maybe a little more around the area as well -- just to make sure you got it all.

I just remove the bad spots.
Any left over food items. very SMALL traces can still become big furry masses. Just get some tongs and pull that little annoyance out Smile

If you get them in the wild where u live (you probably do) put a handfull of woodlice in there, scorps dont eat them and they clean up any mould around, with my emp setup i just have them in an aquarium with hardly any ventilation i just open the wee feeding hatch once or twice a night for a minute or 2 to move the air a bit and i never get mould AT ALL and ive not cleaned the substrate for like 6 months. i use woodlice in all my tropical tanks in fact and NEVER get mould, ever.

Trust me Smile

Actually not as hard as u might think, i thought it would be hard finding them but i was movin some old slabs in my back garden and underneather were hundreds of juvenile woodlice and dozens of adults so i scopped them up n put them in a tub so i can culture them to make sure theyre clean before using them. just look under slabs, bricks etc that are touching soil.

AH! i see your point, god i wish we still got snow here, all we get nowadays is 10 mins of light snow fall and it melts as soon as it touches the ground, even tho its like -5C and thats our anual snowfall here.

I find it quite funny when the news folk tell everyone to wrap up warm and all that when its like +10C out Laughing

But anyways, have a rumage around u mght find some hibernating or sumthin, i dunno what woodlice do in NY lol
