| My H. arizonensis died (not terribly surprised, she'd been acting weird for a while) and smells like isopropanol (rubbing alcohol). | |

| That would be if she smelled like ethanol. Isopropanol (rubbing alcohol): Ethanol (drinking alcohol): | |

| Being in wildlife rehab, I smell all sorts of stuff. You can tell by smell what is wrong with most animals: internal bleeding infection worms old age
You get the idea. Your scorpion could have very well had an infection or some buggy issue. Kim

| MM, where was the scorpion decaying, had you left it in the tank, in the freezer or what?
isopropanol as you know is made by hydration of propene which is second in the alkenes on the list of natural abundance.
Perhaps a chamical reaction between the watery substrte, or chemicals in the freezer? or.... trace elements in the scorpions armoury bits.

| Well, it was H. arizonensis, so the only moisture was in the scorpion itself, and this was prior to freezing.
I actually was unaware of how isopropanol is formed in nature; if that's the case, then I suppose it could quite easily be a natural waste product of whatever microbes were breaking down the scorpion.

| Or if it was frozen, the coolant in your freezer, alcohols absorb heat very fast so logical to mix with a CFC or other water substance | |
